Unholy Alliance: Pope Francis and President Biden

Two Catholic newspapers battle it out over the U.S. president’s visit to Rome.

The gap between liberal and conservative Catholic news outlets in the U.S. intensified significantly after President Biden’s jocular meeting with Pope Francis in Rome on October 29. The 75-minute meeting barring reporters and live streaming was purportedly about climate change although what emerged as the big news afterwards was Biden’s middle finger metaphorical ‘f—u’ to those U.S. Catholic bishops who would bar him from receiving Communion over the abortion issue.

Sen. Ron Johnson sent a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray on Tuesday requesting information about how the FBI uses surveillance aircraft during riots and protests and what it does with the footage.

The Wisconsin Republican cited reports of the FBI using these aircraft to watch the 2014 unrest in Ferguson, Mo., 2015 demonstrations in Baltimore, and the 2020 Black Lives Matter riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Electric vehicle maker Rivian rides Tesla hype train to $100B valuation despite almost no sales

Rivian Automotive, an electric vehicle company that has so far delivered only about 150 electric pickup trucks mostly to its own employees, surpassed General Motors Thursday to become the second most valuable U.S. car company behind Tesla.

The California company went public Wednesday in an initial public offering (IPO) that priced shares at $78 each. By the end of its first day as a public company, those shares were worth more than $100, enough to value the company at $88 billion. That’s more than Ford is worth.

Eric Nuttall: There’s a massive chasm between government policy and our energy reality

It is epically frustrating that in Canada, a country blessed with some of the most abundant energy resources in the world, the majority of the population suffers from profound energy ignorance: the lack of knowledge of how hydrocarbons are used, how critical they are to our daily lives, and the realistic timeline to replace them with a “renewable” alternative.

Right now, wherever you are, look around. Everything you see, from the computer or piece of paper that you are reading this column on, from to the desk that you sit at, to the plastic lining in the coffee cup in front of you, all are either made of, or required the use of, hydrocarbons.

Intelligence community influencers want to scare American Jews into thinking that 75 million Trump voters are domestic terrorists who are targeting you

Bringing Counterterrorism Back Home

The FBI is watching right-wing extremism very closely, says counterterrorism expert Bruce Hoffman. “January 6 was a wake-up call,” he told an audience of Jewish academics, writers, community leaders, and others during a recent Zoom call that I sat in on, hosted by Indiana University’s Institute for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism. “It should add to your unease.”

As director of Georgetown University’s Center for Jewish Civilization who also taught at the International Institute for Counterterrorism at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, Hoffman’s message to worried American Jews is that they’re not scared enough. What Hoffman is trying to do is to scare American Jews into believing that Trump supporters—meaning roughly 75 million Americans, or half of the electorate—are domestic terrorists and violent white supremacists. Worst of all, according to Hoffman, is that there’s not much to be done to stop them. He recommended a service that will scrub your information from the internet. Otherwise, if the red-baseball-cap-wearing hordes come for you, you’re on your own.

GOLDSTEIN: Stephen Harper is the adult in the room on climate change

It’s always refreshing to have an adult walk into the room when talking about Canada’s energy and climate change polices.

Such was the case this week when Stephen Harper, during a virtual meeting of the Canada West Foundation, displayed more common sense in five sentences than all of the flowery rhetoric pouring out of the UN COP 26 climate change summit in Glasgow.

The Duchess of Sussex has apologised to a court for making a misleading statement in her privacy case against the Mail on Sunday’s publishers.

The Appeal Court heard she had asked an aide to pass on information to the authors of a biography – despite having earlier said she “did not contribute”.

… Two of the arguments put forward by Meghan’s lawyers in her battle with the Mail on Sunday would appear to have been compromised by these latest revelations.

She has always claimed that she did not co-operate with the authors of the book Finding Freedom, but she has now remembered that she provided “briefing notes” to one of her key aides whom she knew was in touch with the book’s authors.
