U.K. Politician’s Murder Puts Focus on Anti-Terrorism Program

The murder of a U.K. lawmaker has focused attention on “Prevent,” a program designed to identify people at risk of becoming radicalized, as well as on how to combat “corrosive” online discourse.

U.K. Home Secretary Priti Patel said Sunday the counter-terrorism program is undergoing an independent review. The suspect in the deadly stabbing of Conservative MP David Amess had reportedly been referred to “Prevent” several years ago — as had at least two others in the past few years who went on to commit violent or deadly acts.

‘War is Real’: Defend Taiwan or Give It the Bomb

“The island’s society must be warned that they better not believe the ‘rock solid’ promise of the U.S. because Washington will never fight to the death with the Chinese mainland for the island’s secession,” the Chinese Communist Party’s Global Times proclaimed on October 14, referring to Taiwan.

The words, contained in an editorial, reflects the Party’s propaganda line, and that line almost certainly reflects the thinking of Chinese leaders.

The woman at the centre of the sexual misconduct allegation against Adm. Art McDonald says that there were “several” eyewitnesses that corroborated her story, including at least one senior Navy officer that Global News was able to verify.

The revelation comes just days after McDonald, who is the Canadian Armed Forces’ Chief of the Defence Staff, sent a letter to senior military officers on Thursday claiming his exoneration from the allegation. The letter also argued for his “immediate” return to the top military post.

Why it matters to the world if China delivers on its carbon targets

It has been well documented, most recently in last week’s International Energy Agency report, that the world’s governments have failed keeping up with their own climate change promises.

That is why as the globe prepares for the COP26 conference in Glasgow, Scotland, starting Oct. 31, analysts are watching whether the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, China, is actually on track to meet its own climate objectives.

It’s pledged to have carbon dioxide emissions peak “around 2030” if not earlier, en route to net-zero emissions by 2060.

Yea trust China.

An energy crisis is looming and it could cost us all as stagflation prepares to make a comeback

We haven’t seen anything like this since the 1970s, when oil-producing nations led by Saudi Arabia formed themselves into a cartel and jacked up the price of fuel.

It led to what is known as stagflation. That’s when inflation takes off in a period when economic growth is slowing. Soaring fuel prices added to the cost of pretty much everything. But they also acted as a tax, as everyone was forced to spend more on necessities.

OTTAWA — The recent departure of the head of the Public Health Agency of Canada could stymie opposition efforts to uncover details surrounding a high-security microbiology lab in Winnipeg, where two scientists were fired earlier this year for undisclosed reasons.

China denies testing nuclear-capable hypersonic missile

China has denied reports that it tested a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile earlier this year, insisting instead that it was a routine spacecraft check.

The initial report in the Financial Times newspaper prompted concern in Washington, where US intelligence was reportedly caught by surprise.

Hypersonic missiles are much faster and more agile than normal ones, meaning they are more difficult to intercept.

It comes as concern grows around China’s nuclear capabilities.

Ontario reports 373 new Covid cases … and Immunology professor says people over 65 should pretend they’re not vaccinated

Ontario reports 373 new COVID-19 cases, 2 more deaths

Ontario is reporting just under 400 new COVID-19 cases today as the number of active infections in the province continues to decline.

Provincial health officials logged 373 new COVID-19 cases today, down from 443 on Sunday and 458 one week ago.

Immunology professor says people over 65 should pretend they’re not vaccinated

A COVID-19 antibodies researcher expects to see more deaths among fully vaccinated people as vaccine effectiveness begins to wane.

“The vulnerable are becoming vulnerable again,” said Rodney Russell, a professor of immunology and infectious diseases at Memorial University of Newfoundland.

He said research is showing that the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccinations begins to fade after six or seven months. And since older and vulnerable groups were vaccinated first, they’re seeing the first signs of waning immunity.

Increases in COVID‑19 are unrelated to levels of vaccination across 68 countries and 2947 counties in the United States

At the country-level, there appears to be no discernable relationship between percentage of population fully vaccinated and new COVID-19 cases in the last 7 days (Fig. 1). In fact, the trend line suggests a marginally positive association such that countries with higher percentage of population fully vaccinated have higher COVID-19 cases per 1 million people.
