Millions of Americans want to move to Canada. While few have actually left the country after Trump’s latest victory, they fantasize about living under a leftist government with free health care. And during the recent debates about ObamaCare’s self-destructing subsidies, every self-respecting liberal vehemently denounced America’s backward ‘paid’ health care.
The man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a Utah campus in September has made his first in-person court appearance, as a judge deliberated on the extent of media access to the high-profile case.
Attorneys for Tyler Robinson, 22, and the Utah County Sheriff’s Office had asked the judge to ban cameras in court out of concern that news coverage could prejudice a fair trial.
Kirk’s widow and a coalition of national and local news organisations pushed for transparency and a judge agreed on Thursday to allow cameras in court.
In his bill designed to “keep kids safe from predators,” Justice Minister Sean Fraser has proposed that Canada get rid of the six-month minimum for rape of a child under 16 — and every other minimum on the books other than for murder and treason.
It’s one of several problematic provisions buried in the middle of Bill C-16, which Fraser jubilantly tabled Tuesday. And to be fair to him, the bill isn’t completely bad: it would criminalize deepfake and bestiality porn, would make child sextortion a crime that comes with a minimum of one year in jail, and would supposedly make charges a little harder to kill when a trial runs over deadline. Those changes are very welcome.
Tears of joy streamed down Abdulhkeem Alshater’s face as he joined thousands of other Syrian nationals in central Vienna last year. The moment they were marking felt like a miracle: after more than five decades of brutality and repression, the Assad regime had fallen.
A day later, however, the ripple effects of what had happened 2,000 miles away in Syria were laid bare. A dozen European states announced plans to suspend asylum applications from Syrians, in a show of how western states are increasingly treating refugees as transients. As the fall of Bashar al-Assad collided with politicians’ quest to be seen as taking a hard line on migration, the lives of Syrians around the globe were plunged into uncertainty.
In Austria, where Alshater had spent the past decade painstakingly rebuilding his life – learning German, upgrading his professional certifications and raising his family – the government said it had ordered a review of cases where asylum had been granted to Syrians and that a programme of “orderly repatriation and deportation” was being prepared.
In Vancouver, the Pattullo Bridge has been renamed the “stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge” and Trutch Street is now “šxʷməθkʷəy̓əmasəm Street.” On Vancouver Island, Mount Douglas is now “PKOLS.” On Prince Edward Island, there is a push to rename Confederation Bridge “Epekwitk Crossing.” In Ottawa, the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway is now “Kichi Zībī Mīkan.” And in Saskatoon, John A. Macdonald Road has been replaced with “miyo-wâhkôhtowin Road.”
The Trump administration is considering designating the UN’s Palestinian relief agency, UNRWA, as a terrorist organization, a move that would expose it to U.S. sanctions amid mounting allegations of deep ties to Hamas.
Washington was long the largest donor to UNRWA but halted funding in January 2024 after Israel accused several UNRWA staff of involvement in the deadly October 7th, 2023 Hamas terrorist attack that triggered the conflict in Gaza.
Minneapolis — @nickshirleyy encountered a masked far-left Antifa-type of activist who says he supports whites being robbed for reparations. A black person tried to grab his phone but the leftist refuses to hand it over, saying he needs it. pic.twitter.com/ic6zF7XBGl
Prisoners on hunger strike while awaiting trial on allegations relating to Palestine Action could die if David Lammy refuses to meet to discuss their treatment, their lawyers say.
Two of the eight prisoners have been refusing food for more than five weeks and five have already been admitted to hospital.
To all of the idiots out there that say “diversity is our strength,” please watch this!
This is what inviting thousands of legal and illegal Somali Muslims into Minneapolis actually looks like. *Must watch to the end…John Fitzgerald explains what it’s like to live here.… pic.twitter.com/ZfOcQQkYha

Chiefs from Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta are calling for a pause on the pipeline memorandum of understanding until they are consulted and sign off on the potential project. And they’re threatening legal action if that doesn’t happen.
The chiefs spoke in Ottawa Thursday, decrying what they said was a lack of consultation with First Nations before Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith agreed to the MOU in November.
“We have formally notified the prime minister that any further attempt by Canada, Alberta, or industry to move ahead without us will result in immediate action,” Grand Chief Trevor Mercredi said.
