Ukraine War: Counter-offensive troops punch through Russia line, generals claim

Ukrainian generals claim they have breached Russia’s formidable first line of defences in the south, as the counter-offensive launched earlier this summer may be poised to gather pace.

Since June, Kyiv’s territorial gains have been very small – but is Ukraine finally at a turning point?

“Yes, it’s true,” says Yuriy Sak, an advisor to Ukraine’s defence minister, when asked if the breach had happened.

“Little by little, I think we’re gaining momentum,” he said.

Will Jeffrey Epstein’s Sex-Trafficking Clients Be Named?

For those who think the truth about the crime and slime associated with Jeffrey Epstein has been deep-sixed down the memory hole, there may be another bite at this rotten apple. Mimi Lui, an attorney representing the U.S. Virgin Islands, has filed suit in federal court against JPMorgan Chase. Lui charged that over $1 billion in suspicious transactions have been reported to the U.S. Treasury since Epstein’s death and that JPMorgan Chase ignored sex-trafficking red flags over many years, thus enabling these crimes. The case will go to trial on October 23 unless a settlement is reached.

MPs say democracy is fraying in Canada — but there’s hope

A number of MPs say Canada’s democracy is under pressure on a number of fronts, thanks in part to the impacts of social media and extreme partisanship.

But the eight MPs who took part in a series of one-on-one interviews with CBC’s The House over the summer also expressed a hope that changes to the Canadian system, and a deeper understanding of one another, could lead to better politics.

They hope we’ll stop noticing their greed and incompetence. People are tired of being f&cked over by the political class. Get used to it.

Israel’s Netanyahu says he wants Eritrean migrants involved in violent clashes to be deported

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday he wants Eritrean migrants involved in a violent clash in Tel Aviv to be deported immediately and has ordered a plan to remove all of the country’s African migrants.

The remarks came a day after bloody protests by rival groups of Eritreans in south Tel Aviv left dozens of people injured. Eritreans, supporters and opponents of Eritrea’s government, faced off with construction lumber, pieces of metal and rocks, smashing shop windows and police cars. Israeli police in riot gear shot tear gas, stun grenades and live rounds while officers on horseback tried to control the protesters.

Scientists at odds over ‘alien artefact’ that may be ‘dino-killer fragment’

Harvard physicist criticised by peers for ‘over-hyped’ claims of interstellar spacecraft though some find his ideas ‘credible’

It would be among the most extraordinary discoveries in scientific history: fragments of an alien spacecraft from another Solar System that landed on Earth.

This week Harvard astrophysicist Professor Avi Loeb said he may have made just such a find after retrieving metallic objects from the seabed where a meteorite crashed into the Pacific Ocean near Papua New Guinea in 2014.

His claim has been met with disbelief from other scientists who have offered alternative yet still extraordinary explanations for the metal spherules.

London braces for a mass murder trial with a rare twist

Within a week of one of London’s darkest days, accused murderer Nathaniel Veltman was told during an early court appearance that the case against him would be pursued as a terrorist offence.

In the chaos and sadness of those days in June 2021, after four members of a Pakistani Muslim family were killed and one badly injured in a hit-and-run collision, federal and provincial prosecutors announced the terrorism charges as the justice system began to process the case.
