‘We are seen as less human’: inside Marseille’s districts abandoned by the police

Inside, Emmanuel Macron was sharing a typically polished vision of a rejuvenated, safer Marseille. Yet it was outside the spruced-up gym in the impoverished Busserine district – tensions building on the hottest day of the year – where the real story was playing out.

Little more than 12 hours before the police killing of a 17-year-old boy 500 miles north in Nanterre would convulse the country, scores of officers clutching assault rifles and bulletproof riot shields clashed with teenagers of north African descent, trading insults as officers profiled potential troublemakers.

“Marseille’s districts abandoned by the police” AKA Intensely hostile “NO GO Zones” established by drug gangs.

The shoplifting epidemic taking over America with a $100B annual price tag

The stories are everywhere: Walmart store closures in Portland and Chicago; an epidemic of drug store thefts in New York. In Baltimore, a “landmark” grocery store shuts its doors after nearly 25 years in a community desperate for fresh food.

While in San Francisco, reports of big-box chains abandoning its downtown have become near-daily occurrences.

The cause: rampant, often organized, and seemingly consequenceless shoplifting.

Even those saying Indigenous land acknowledgments don’t feel personal responsibility for injustices: poll

Reconciliation between Canada and its Indigenous population is marked increasingly through words — spoken in land acknowledgements and written as names on things. A national public opinion poll suggests there is a wide disconnect between those words and how most Canadians feel.

A solid majority of Canadians accept that injustice to Indigenous people in Canada amounts to genocide, but few think they have personal responsibility, even for injustices continuing today; few even blame the government. And while land acknowledgements, accepting this country is on Indigenous territory, are common in official circles, they are often received with indifference; even those saying them don’t often believe it applies to them.

Toronto’s homeless encampments are a challenge on Olivia’s Chow’s doorstep

When Olivia Chow moves into the mayor’s office in a couple of weeks, one of the biggest issues on her desk will be what to do about Toronto’s homeless encampments. Unruly collections of tents and tarps have sprung up in parks, ravines and underpasses around the city. There are a staggering 270 of them, twice as many as a year ago.

They are not nice places to live in. Fires, overdoses and fights are common. They are not nice places to live near, either. Neighbours and passersby often complain about noise, garbage and discarded needles.

Chow will embrace homeless camps and encourage their expansion all the while demanding tax payers pony up to solve a problem she has no intention of fixing.

Solving the “Homeless crisis” would kill the Golden Goose.

America’s Promotion of Gay Rights Triggers Backlash in Middle East

With Pride Month nearing its end and Middle Easterners marking one of the most important dates on the Islamic calendar, Eid al Adha, followers of an Iraqi Shiite sect have decided to burn the rainbow flag in front of the Swedish embassy at Baghdad.

The leader of the Sadr group, Muqtada al Sadr, called on his followers to burn the LGBTQ banner in retaliation to a Koran burning in front of a Stockholm mosque on Wednesday. His supporters chanted, “No to Israel, no to America, yes to Islam,” as they set ablaze a makeshift rainbow flag.

Nolte: Add ‘Indiana Jones‘ to This List of Kathleen Kennedy‘s Stunning Failures

Disney’s Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy has spent the last decade destroying everything she touches and has done so deliberately. She obviously hates what made Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Willow so iconic, and so, she used her shallow, divisive reactionary politics to express that hatred by defiling all three into something unrecognizable.

The AfD surge in Germany is good for Jews and Israel

The German right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD) won an absolute majority in local elections for the first time ever. The government-funded German Jewish Council was appalled, but AfD is the most pro-Israel party in Germany.

A wave of outrage and disgust from around the world greeted the election of a modest lawyer named Robert Sesselmann to the provincial office of county commissioner in Sonneberg, Thuringia, a woodland province in Eastern Germany. The reactions must seem familiar to Israeli voters who support the Conservative government Netanyahu VI. You would think they elected Itamar Ben-Gvir as police minister.

The attention showered on an obscure by-election for the humble office of county commissioner in East Germany’s tiniest county is quite astounding. The real reason for the outburst, of course, is the nationwide upsurge in support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

Robot scrambled to search for Titan sub found wreck straight away

A robot sent to search for the missing submersible Titan found its remains almost immediately after it went down to the site of the Titanic, the head of the team that led the search said.

Ed Cassano, the chief executive of the New York-based Pelagic Research Services, tearfully recalled sending his company’s remote operating vehicle (ROV) on what he hoped would be a rescue mission. “Shortly after we arrived on the sea floor, we discovered the debris of the Titan submersible,” he said.

Heartbreak City: Here’s How ABC/CBS/NBC Handled Friday’s SCOTUS Cases (Hint: Not Well)

Just as they did on Thursday morning, the major broadcast networks of ABC, CBS, and NBC each broke in Friday morning for the final Supreme Court cases of the session, which were President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan (Biden v. Nebraska) and a free speech case involving a  Christian web designer and LGBTQ individuals (303 Creative LLC v. Elenis).

While the takes weren’t as scorching as Thursday, Friday featured slanted takes bemoaning what the Court striking down multi-hundred billion dollar student loan forgiveness will do to the economy and claiming without evidence that ruling for webmaster Lorie Smith will open the doors to LGBTQ discrimination.
