How Obama’s Muslim Childhood Became a Taboo Topic

Reflections on when a gigantic biographical inconvenience was successfully hidden and denied.

Americans have an abiding fascination with their presidents, especially with their foibles and secrets. Who lied? Who ordered illegal operations? Who had mistresses?

Thus was the country transfixed by Bill Clinton, Monica Lewinsky, and the tawdry drip-drip of their liaison. When newly declassified documents revealed hitherto unknown CIA connections to Lee Harvey Oswald, this made a media splash, with Tucker Carlson asking: “Did the CIA have a hand in the murder of John F. Kennedy?”

Cursive is making a comeback: Ontario to make learning script mandatory in school

Cursive is making a comeback.

Relegated in 2006 to an optional piece of learning in Ontario elementary schools, cursive writing is set to return as a mandatory part of the curriculum starting in September.

Education Minister Stephen Lecce said it is about more than just teaching students how to sign their own name.

“The research has been very clear that cursive writing is a critical life skill in helping young people to express more substantively, to think more critically, and ultimately, to express more authentically,” he said in an interview.

I see trouble ahead, the kids will be writing their own notes to excuse themselves from attending Drag Queen Indoctrination Hour. No wonder the teachers are upset.

Wagner mercenaries march on Moscow to target ‘evil’ military top brass

Fears of a coup are growing in Russia this morning after Wagner mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin declared war on Moscow’s military leadership and claimed to have marched on the city of Rostov ‘unopposed’.

The private army boss claimed to have also shot down a Russian military helicopter in the city – home to the Kremlin’s headquarters for the war in Ukraine – which ‘opened fire on a civilian column’.

FSB calls for Yevgeny Prigozhin to be arrested

Russia opened a criminal probe into the maverick leader of the Wagner mercenary group after he alleged the Russian army killed an “enormous number” of his fighters in rocket strikes on their rear bases in Ukraine.

In an unprecedented escalation of his feud with the country’s top brass, Yevgeny Prigozhin threatened to “march” on Moscow with 25,000 fighters and punish those responsible, prompting speculation of a coup attempt.

He warned Russians against resisting his mercenaries and called on others to join him.

Ukraine’s Western-Trained Brigades Begin to Enter the Fight

They are fighting more effectively at night than their Russian counterparts, U.S. officials say.

They are using American-made Bradley fighting vehicles to destroy Russian armor with anti-tank missiles. And they are deploying combined arms tactics — synchronized attacks by infantry, armor and artillery forces — that they learned from American and other Western troops.

It is, finally, showtime for the 36,000 Ukrainian soldiers — nine brigades — that have been armed, equipped and trained outside of Ukraine over the past several months by the United States and its NATO allies.

Titan sub CEO dismissed safety warnings as ‘baseless cries’, emails show

Warnings over the safety of OceanGate’s Titan submersible were repeatedly dismissed by the CEO of the company, email exchanges with a leading deep sea exploration specialist show.

In messages seen by the BBC, Rob McCallum told OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush that he was potentially putting his clients at risk and urged him to stop using the sub until it had been classified by an independent body.

Mr Rush responded that he was “tired of industry players who try to use a safety argument to stop innovation”.

Sabrina Maddeaux: Olivia Chow — a regressive politician who will oversee Toronto’s downfall

On Monday, Toronto voters will have the chance to elect a mayor who can save the city from the same spiral of decay and despair that’s claimed cities like San Francisco and Seattle. That mayor is not Olivia Chow.

The issue at hand isn’t about partisan politics, but her gravely outdated understanding of the city’s problems and her orthodox approach in a time that demands truly bold action.

If Toronto elects Chow they deserve everything they get, except an asteroid strike that would be far too merciful.

Secularism will not survive the demographic change in France – nor in Europe

In reality it is a question of the invasion of one civilization into the territory of another, transforming the face of its culture.

Guillaume Cuchet, who teaches at the Sorbonne and is the author of key books on religion including “How our world has ceased to be Christian” (Seuil), tells La Vie about the end of this world:

“The rise of Islam (from 8 to 11 per cent, plus 37 per cent in 12 years), the collapse of Catholicism (from 43 to 25 per cent) and the rise of atheists (from 45 to 53 per cent hundred). If we extend the curves, we can clearly see the landscape that will prevail. In these conditions, if nothing changes, it is not impossible that Catholicism will become, one day not so far off, the second, even the third religion. What yesterday was unimaginable or considered a school hypothesis has become possible, indeed probable, and tomorrow will be certain”.

Was Joe Biden in on Hunter’s grift?

IRS whistleblowers have come forward to the House Ways and Means Committee with astonishing claims

The Republicans investigating the Biden family grift had a big week, not that you would know it from reading the New York Times or Washington Post. Just how big a week it will turn out to be depends on whether congressional investigators can actually prove what the two IRS whistleblowers allege.

Why is it so rare to hear about Western cyber-attacks?

A cyber-attack that took over iPhones at a Russian technology company is being blamed on US government hackers. Could the attack, and the response from the Russian government, be rewriting the narrative of who the good guys and bad guys are in cyber-space?

Camaro Dragon, Fancy Bear, Static Kitten and Stardust Chollima – these aren’t the latest Marvel film superheroes but the names given to some of the most feared hacking groups in the world.

For years, these elite cyber teams have been tracked from hack to hack, stealing secrets and causing disruption allegedly under orders from their governments.
