Cash is no longer king — and will become ‘less useable’ in future, says Bank

Cash will become less useable as high street shops increasingly reject bank notes because of the rise in digital payments, a senior Bank of England official has said.

It will become harder to spend physical money in the coming years because contactless payments are on the rise and consumers are increasingly turning to the internet for purchases, according to Sir Jon Cunliffe, a deputy governor at the central bank and a member of its rate-setting committee.

Alberta eyes legislation on involuntary treatment for some drug users

The Alberta government is considering introducing a law that would broaden the circumstances under which people with severe drug addictions could be placed into treatment without their consent.

The legislation would be the first involuntary treatment law in Canada to target addiction specifically. Some jurisdictions, including Alberta, already use mental-health law to push people into drug treatment without court orders in exceptionally severe situations. But otherwise adult drug users can refuse help.

We make it very easy for people to slowly kill themselves on our streets while they in turn wreak havoc on our quality of life.

The arguments that emptied the asylums onto our streets are made in the Globe article. Why they are seen as humane is beyond me.

WARMINGTON: Used syringes in east-end Toronto park just waiting to jab somebody

Is the story that Toronto’s so-called safe injection of hard drugs policy means addicts leave behind used syringes in city parks or is it that no one from the city seems to come to take them away?

Bavaria mulls reopening nuclear plant under state control

Bavarian Premier Markus Söder on Sunday proposed that his southern German state could assume control of the Isar 2 nuclear power plant, which was permanently taken off the grid, along with two other remaining power stations shortly before midnight.

Söder, who has been a staunch critic of Germany’s decision to transition away from nuclear energy, told the Bild am Sonntag newspaper that the move would require an amendment to the Atomic Energy Act to hand control of nuclear power from the federal to the state level.

It was a monumentally stupid decision to shut down the reactors.

Theo Argitis: Why economists — not politicians — are raising alarms around immigration

… But it’s not just housing. Economists are beginning to see warning signs in another gauge: rising population isn’t coming with a commensurate increase in economic output.

According to data released by the International Monetary Fund last week, Canada’s population growth will help fuel the biggest increase in national income among G7 countries over the next six years, but our economy will also see the smallest increase in GDP per capita.

Is the U.S. in a proxy war with Russia?

Three days before the Feb. 24 anniversary of his Ukraine invasion, Vladimir Putin outlined what he had learned during a year of war. With its ever-increasing supply of sophisticated weapons, Putin said, the West was now using Ukraine as a “testing range” for its plans to destroy Russia.

Its goal was “to spark a war in Europe, and to eliminate competitors by using a proxy force,” he said in a presidential address. “They plan to finish us once and for all.”

Biden Confronted About U.S. Troops Reportedly Operating in Ukraine Without Congressional Authority

Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL), known for his efforts to withdraw U.S. troops from overseas missions that have not received congressional approval, has introduced a new Privileged Resolution of Inquiry demanding President Biden to disclose the exact number of American military personnel operating in Ukraine.

This resolution comes after leaked Pentagon documents revealed the presence of previously unreported U.S. Special Forces in Ukraine.

Trudeau family vacationed with wealthy friends who donated to Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation while Canadians worried about making their mortgage payments and putting food on the table

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family spent the holiday season at a luxurious estate in Jamaica belonging to a wealthy family that made a large donation two years ago to the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation, Radio-Canada has learned.

Given the relationship between the Trudeaus and Peter Green’s family — which dates back to the 1970s — the trip was cleared by the ethics commissioner before departure, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Green owns the Prospect estate with five “stunning villas” on the edge of the Caribbean Sea.

But neither the Office of the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner nor the PMO would state whether they were aware that the Green family is a donor to the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation when they evaluated the trip.

He is a shitheel.

Wagner Group mercenaries admit killing 40 children in Bakhmut

Two former Russian mercenaries have admitted killing hundreds of Ukrainian civilians, including dozens of children who were sheltering in a basement in eastern Ukraine.

Canadians need to worry more about defence and security

Arguably, humans and nation-states share at least one desirable characteristic: the capacity for self-awareness. In periods of stability, self-awareness need not be at the top of the list of the most desired characteristics. However, with the rapid political and social changes taking place in the world right now, self-awareness, for both individuals and governments, is critical.

Thoughts about the Security of U.S. Airspace in Advance of the Pending Hearing with AARO Director.

Thoughts about the Security of U.S. Airspace in Advance of the Pending Hearing with AARO Director.

Chinese spy balloons generated sensational press attention earlier this year, but they are no longer a significant problem now that we have adjusted our air defense radar systems. Large balloons can easily be detected, and, if necessary, destroyed, long before they reach the U.S. However, before concluding that U.S. airspace is secure, consider these disturbing incidents documented by investigative journalists at The War Zone:

To the best of my knowledge, none of these incidents has been resolved.

GOLDSTEIN: A strike by federal workers? Read the room

At the beginning of the pandemic, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau repeatedly used the phrase, “We are all in this together and we are there for you,” speaking about the federal government.

But during the pandemic, Canadians learned they weren’t all in this together. Not really.

That there were two classes of Canadians — those in the public sector and those in the private sector.

ISIS Whores Go Missing, Blackie’s Star Pretends Their Victims

They were supposed to come home from Syria. Instead two Canadian women, three teen girls have gone missing

Two Canadian women and three teenage girls are missing somewhere in northeast Syria, after an attempt by the Canadian government to repatriate them earlier this month failed.

In an audio recording obtained by the Star, a Global Affairs Canada consular official tells the mother of one of the women that she is “devastated” by their disappearance.

“This has happened to other countries, and they tried to warn us, and when it did actually happen … we’re kind of shocked by it,” the senior consular official said in the April 11 call.

‘Disappointing’ usage of electric vehicle charging stations in 1st year

One city-owned charging station was used just 65 times in 2022

A full year after they were installed, Ottawans appear slow to embrace the city’s new fleet of public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations — but usage is trending upward.

The City of Ottawa installed a total of 24 EV charging stations across 16 sites spread throughout the city (some sites have two chargers). It currently bills $2 an hour for the service, a price point it says is in line with other cities.

As of last Friday, each of the city-owned charging stations had been in place for at least one year. In that time, a clearer picture of how Ottawans are using the technology has emerged.
