Meta to Block Access to News on Facebook, Instagram If Online News Act Adopted As-Is

OTTAWA—Facebook and Instagram’s parent company says it will stop making news content available on its platforms if the proposed federal Online News Act passes in its current form.

Meta spokesperson Lisa Laventure says the company made the decision because the act will require it to pay publishers for links or content it doesn’t post.

Laventure says paying for these posts is neither sustainable nor workable for Meta.

Statues of ‘old white men’ may need to be destroyed, Welsh government advises

Historical figures praised in their day may now be perceived as ‘aggressors’ out ‘to expand the British Empire’, warns new guidance

Statues of “old white men” such as the Duke of Wellington and Admiral Lord Nelson could be hidden or destroyed to create the “right historical narrative”, according to Welsh government guidance.

Historical statues that often glorify “powerful, older, able-bodied white men” may be “offensive” to a more diverse modern public, according to guidance which is expected to be finalised this month.

WaPo Confused Why It’s Wrong For Catholic Priests To Use Hookup Apps

A recent Washington Post article slammed a Denver nonprofit known as Catholic Laity and Clergy for Renewal (CLCR), saying the organization “spent millions on app data that tracked gay priests.” Elsewhere, the Post cited anonymous sources and no other evidence to claim that “those familiar with [CLCR’s] project said the organizers’ focus was gay priests.”

Silicon Valley Bank: born at a poker game, killed by a gamble

An email landed in Andrew Sinclair’s inbox. You’ve just been paid,” it read. Except, he hadn’t. The 51-year-old father of three, head of sales at the New York research firm Quill Intelligence, logged into his bank account and saw that no money had landed.

“My life runs pretty tight, so I look forward to my cheque,” he said.

Confused, he contacted Rippling, the start-up that handles payroll for his employer. Rippling didn’t respond, but on Twitter, he saw Rippling’s chief executive, Parker Conrad, had just tweeted a mea culpa.

More at WSJ – Where Were the Regulators as SVB Crashed?

Silicon Valley Bank’s failure boils down to a simple misstep: It grew too fast using borrowed short-term money from depositors who could ask to be repaid at any time, and invested it in long-term assets that it was unable, or unwilling, to sell.

When interest rates rose quickly, it was saddled with losses that ultimately forced it to try to raise fresh capital, spooking depositors who yanked their funds in two days. The question following the bank’s takeover Friday: How could regulators have allowed it to grow so quickly and take on so much interest-rate risk?

The British Resistance’s time has come

RESISTANCE is a strong word, evoking clandestine struggle against overwhelming odds: underground networks, such as the Dutch and French Resistance, refusing to accept occupation. Such movements attain near-mythical status, become hard-wired into national psyches. Resistance conjures an opaque world of subterfuge, valour and loyalty. It entails sober acknowledgement of usurped power, and daring, sometimes uncompromising, methods to wrest it back.

Mexico Threatens ‘Foreign Influence’ in US Elections on Behalf of Dems

The real foreign election interference Democrats don’t want to talk about.

Democrats and their media claim that there’s an urgent crisis of foreign influence in our elections. Yet every time one actually emerges, like Iran helping Biden in 2020, there’s sudden silence.

A foreign leader can get up and announce that he will interfere in elections on behalf of the Democrats and only a few conservative outlets will even cover it.

How Beijing Boxed America Out of the South China Sea

In early February, a Philippine coast guard vessel approached a small outpost in the South China Sea when it was hit by green laser beams that temporarily blinded its crew. The source was a
Chinese coast guard ship, which Philippine authorities said approached dangerously close.
A few weeks earlier, the U.S. military accused a Chinese fighter pilot of another unsafe action over the waterway—flying within 20 feet of the nose of a U.S. Air Force aircraft.

Before that came a November incident involving a Philippine boat that was towing debris from a Chinese rocket launch. China’s coast guard deployed an inflatable boat to cut the tow line and retrieve the object, said Philippine officials.

The real Covid conspiracy

The departing director of the world’s second biggest philanthropic donor and one of the most influential funders of scientific research was doing his best to sound noble. In an interview marking his departure from the Wellcome Trust, Sir Jeremy Farrar was talking about the failures of political leaders, the threats of “zoonotic” diseases spilling over from animals to humans, the importance of scientists helping to shape the future, and how experts must speak out to prevent “conspiracy theories” being “amplified”.

The rise of hyper-tokenism – Why do TV shows insist on presenting Britain as far more ‘diverse’ than it actually is?

Almost half the British public believes that ethnic minorities are overrepresented on television, according to a recent YouGov survey. Apparently, 45 per cent of Brits said the broadcast media did not accurately reflect the make-up of society, with ethnic minorities more represented on TV than in the population.

The same propagandizing goes on in Canada. Woke corporations are so insistent on waving tokens about that commercials are an insult to the target audience.

Divers used chartered yacht to sabotage Nord Stream pipelines – report

Andromeda – Alleged Nord Stream Pipeline Sabotage Boat

The underwater bombing of the Nord Stream gas pipelines last September was carried out by a team of divers operating from a 15-metre chartered yacht called the Andromeda, according to a new report.

The report in Der Spiegel traces the Andromeda’s route around the Baltic from its home marina in Rostock on 6 September to the German island of Rügen and then finally to the Danish island of Christiansø, close to the site of the blasts on 26 September.

Experts have questioned whether the amount of explosives used in the sabotage attacks, estimated to be several hundred kilograms, as well with the necessary breathing apparatus and other equipment could have been carried on such a small boat, raising the question of whether another vessel was involved.

UK Scientists Propose Rationing To Combat Climate Change

Many unique measures have been proposed in recent months in the name of protecting our planet, including shifting to a more bug-based diet or, taking notes from much of the world’s response to COVID, imposing “climate lockdowns.” Scientists from the University of Leeds, however, suggest the answer can be found even further back than 2020 and argue that political leaders should consider “World War II-style rationing.”

Pope Francis: ‘Gender ideology’ is one of ‘most dangerous ideological colonizations’

Pope Francis spoke out against gender theory in a recent interview, echoing his past comments expressing disapproval of transgender ideology.

“Gender ideology, today, is one of the most dangerous ideological colonizations,” Francis said in the conversation.

The pope made the comments in a March 10 interview with Argentinian newspaper La Nación — the conversation was translated into English by the Catholic News Agency.

“Why is it dangerous?” he continued. “Because it blurs differences and the value of men and women.”
