‘It’s not bouncing back:’ Workers continue to return to downtown Toronto but recovery lags behind some cities

And you know as I do that most of the “benefit shoppers” will end up in Toronto so we have that going for us.

Torontonians appear to be returning downtown in greater numbers but the pace of the city’s economic recovery still lags behind many other North American cities, a new study suggests.

Researchers at the University of Toronto and the University of California, Berkeley have been jointly tracking cellphone data throughout the pandemic as a means of evaluating the economic recoveries in 62 North American cities.

Toronto does not have a reason to exist any longer other than as a mass-immigration dumping ground.

Ottawa Didn’t Disclose China’s Spy Balloon Because There Were ‘Lives at Stake,’ Minister Says

Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino says Ottawa didn’t tell the public about China’s spy balloon that was spotted over North America because there were “lives at stake.”

“There are lives at stake. There are techniques at stake. This is complex stuff,” Mendicino told the Canada-China House of Commons committee on Feb. 6.

Why is the government spending $21-million advertising on social media such as TikTok?

When the U.S. Senate passed a bill in December to restrict the use of TikTok on government-issued devices, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau noted that “we are watching what the Americans are doing.” But the government does more than just watch – it spent $21-million advertising on the likes of TikTok last year.

As we scroll these days, we may notice a government-promoted post, which means that we as taxpayers have paid to post information on a platform and push it into people’s feeds. The $21-million spent last year is at the crest of a steady increase over the years, up from $7.8-million in 2017. On TikTok specifically, the Government of Canada spent $1.7-million on ads last year, up 128 per cent from the previous year.

Oh, Canada: Stefanik blasts Adams as helping migrants ‘escape law,’ Biden for ‘passing buck’

Mayor Eric Adams came under fire Monday from a top Republican member of Congress who accused him of helping migrants illegally leave New York for Canada in violation of US law.

US Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) of Glens Falls blasted the mayor following an exclusive NY Post report that revealed how migrants got free bus tickets to upstate Plattsburgh, then walked into Canada at an unofficial border crossing 20 miles north.

“New Yorkers deserve answers for why their taxpayer dollars are being spent to help illegal immigrants violate their parole and escape the law,” said the No. 4 House Republican, whose district covers Plattsburgh and the Roxham Road crossing into Canada.

Kelly McParland: The Trudeauing of Amira Elghawaby

… the Elghawaby fiasco is a vintage example of the Trudeau approach to governing. It was all about posturing and pandering, an attempt to win support in a specific voting demographic disguised as social justice. It was launched hastily, with eyes primarily on the next day’s headlines and the anticipated gains to be had. Nobody in the Prime Minister’s Office did much in the way of homework, even to the extent of a minimal vetting of the candidate.

If China is covering up its Covid death toll, what else is it hiding?

Official statistics clearly cannot be trusted

A story in CityAM this morning will make for uncomfortable reading in Downing Street. The latest business survey from the BDO consultancy has found that more than half of UK firms are worried about reliable access to vital inputs. Supply chain disruptions and labour shortages have already stoked inflation, so the fact that so many producers anticipate further problems is bad news.

A worried Washington Post reports that White people have flocked back to city centers

Possible reaction of Post editorial board

In the 20th century, “White flight” transformed many American cities as White people moved in droves from urban centers to the suburbs.

In the last decade, that exodus kicked into reverse.

The White population increased between 2010 and 2020 in hundreds of neighborhoods at the center of many large cities, even as it declined almost everywhere else in the country. This influx, which in some cases began before 2010 but has accelerated and expanded, has brought about new upheavals, making some of the country’s biggest urban cores feel increasingly unrecognizable to longtime Black, Hispanic and Asian residents.

OMG! They’re movin in and fixin up the place!

Salman Rushdie speaks publicly for first time since attack

Sir Salman Rushdie, the author, has said he feels lucky to be alive after he was attacked on stage at a literary event in New York last year, speaking for the first time since the incident.

Rushdie said he was beginning to feel better and his “overwhelming feeling is gratitude” that he was not more seriously injured.

In August, the Indian-born British novelist was stabbed an estimated 12 times, including in the face and neck, losing his sight in one eye. He spent six weeks in hospital after the attack.

So we’re canceling AI for being transphobic now

With the dramatic expansion of artificial intelligence-generated text, the speed and frequency of the internet’s milkshake-ducking has become all the more essential. If you believe that problematic speech is the same as violence, it’s hard enough to be on the lookout for material generated by living and breathing human beings — now you have a horde of AI chatbots to monitor as well. And unlike their human counterparts, these chatbots lack the shame and fear to prevent them from saying things at odds with cultural trends.

Prevent accused of treating Islamic terrorism like a mental illness rather than a threat in official report

Islamic extremists are being treated as victims rather than the public being protected from the threat they pose, an official review into the Government’s anti-radicalisation programme will warn.

The report into Prevent, due to be published on Wednesday, is expected to find that officials have been too focused on addressing the “personal vulnerabilities” of extremists, with terrorism treated as a mental illness.

William Shawcross, the review author and former chairman of the Charity Commission, is set to say this “mischaracterisation” of radicalisation has meant officials have failed to tackle the ideological beliefs behind Islamist extremism with “potentially serious consequences”.

Germany: Train and Station Knife Attacks More Than Doubled in 2022

The number of criminal offenses, including violent knife attacks and sexual assaults, rose considerably on trains and at train stations in Germany over the past year. Official government figures reveal that incidents involving knife attacks more than doubled compared to the previous year.

While the federal police registered 398,848 criminal offenses on trains and at train stations in 2022, an uptick of roughly 12% compared to the previous year, 336 knife attacks—82 on trains and 254 at train stations—were recorded, representing an increase of 102% year over year, the Hamburg-based newspaper Der Spiegel reports.

According to the statistics collected by the federal police last year, 71 suspects were investigated for violent crimes involving the use of knives on trains, 36 of whom were classified as “non-Germans”—just over 50%. In the previous year, that figure was six of 25, or 24%.

Lions of the Jordan Valley: Israeli mixed-gender unit kills Hamas militants in raid

At least five Palestinian militants have been killed in a dawn raid by the recently-founded Lions of the Jordan Valley, an Israeli light-infantry unit with a high proportion of female soldiers.

According to the Israeli army, the raid was part of a continuing operation to locate a Hamas cell that had tried to carry out an attack on restaurant in Vered Yericho, an Israeli settlement in the Jordan Valley near Jericho, last week.
