Japan downgrades Covid amid vaccine safety concerns

The country is one of the most vaccine-sceptical in the world

The Japanese government is planning to downgrade the status of Covid-19, reclassifying the disease to the level of seasonal flu. Covid is currently at the second most serious threat level, on a par with tuberculosis and SARS, but after reclassification it would be at number 5 of 5. The move would mean the lifting of nearly all remaining restrictions, and would place barriers in the way of their reimposition. We could be close, it seems, after three wearisome years, to returning to something resembling the old normal.

Scotiabank to Close Accounts of Controversial Podcaster, Army Veteran Jeremy MacKenzie, Bans Him From Branches

Jeremy MacKenzie, a Canadian Armed Forces veteran and former infantry soldier with three children, who runs a podcast called “Raging Dissident,” has been banned from his banking institution, Scotiabank, and told by the bank that it no longer wants him as a customer.

MacKenzie said he will consider legal action. “I might need to sue them because I feel like this is predatory. This is discriminatory because of my legal situation,” he said on the call with Scotiabank.

Convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell alleged in her first jailhouse interview that the notorious photograph of Prince Andrew and Virginia Giuffre at her London home in 2000 is likely a “fake,” claiming she has “no memory” of introducing the pair more than two decades ago.

The Oxford-educated Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year sentence in a Florida federal prison for her role in a scheme to sexually exploit and abuse multiple minor girls with Jeffrey Epstein over the course of a decade, was recently interviewed by British broadcaster Jeremy Kyle from behind bars.

IN HIS opening speech at the WEF Crystal Awards in Davos, Klaus Schwab referred to the many ‘crisis’ [sic] facing humanity, asking the question ‘How to master the future?’ To put it simply, humanity is a management problem from the point of view of the masters. From the point of view of humanity, the problem is the management.

To back up this presentation of permanent crisis, the WEF publishes a list of Global Risks, projecting future concerns for the next several years to the next decade. Those who answer these surveys seem to be more concerned about the weather than anything else.

The Covid-19 pandemic recently marked its third year. Life has seemingly returned to normal for people in many countries. But Covid itself lingers. Milder variants with significantly higher lethality rates than the seasonal flu circulate. Long-Covid symptoms still plague those afflicted. The official worldwide Covid death toll tops 6 million, while the excess-death count is above 20 million. Just weeks ago, China abandoned its zero-Covid policy overnight without proper preparation, inducing a catastrophe of millions dead under the Omicron wave, as many elders were not vaccinated. Japan recently recorded a new peak in Covid deaths as of December 2022. To paraphrase Yogi Berra — the pandemic ain’t over until it’s over.

In the wake of a horrific mass casualty shooting at the Parkland High School, the initiative sent an open letter to NRA’s then executive vice president, Wayne La Pierre, denouncing the NRA and accusing it of opposing “every single basic gun reform measure that might have saved lives” and vowing to “shine a bright light on what you and your organization do to America.”

Assisted dying is a slippery slope

What are your thoughts on assisted dying and assisted suicide? That’s the question asked by a Health and Social Care Committee consultation, closing today, that could shape changes to the law on euthanasia. Having had intimate experience of what can happen when a vulnerable person feels themselves to be a burden, I’m against.

My mother had Parkinson’s, and once she burst out to me that: ‘You’d have so much more time and money if it weren’t for me’. It would be the easiest thing in the world to push someone in that condition towards feeling that it would be better for everyone if she were given a dignified death. Actually my mother did have a dignified death, at home, even though, by then, she had to have everything done for her.

The British Invasion, Part I

The Beatles first visited the United States in 1964. They were the tip of the spear of the so-called British Invasion, the first of several pop groups to take America by storm. Fifty years later, Britain would export another boy band also named the Beatles. However, instead of touring the United States, they travelled to Syria, where they beheaded journalists and aid workers in cold blood. You could not invent a better signifier of British decline.

This cultural transformation does not reflect British hearts and minds. As a nation, we weren’t persuaded by fist-banging muftis or gun-toting clerics. On the contrary, the shift in our society has been imposed from the outside. A cocktail of involuntary impositions, mass legal and illegal migration, a Pravda programme of censorship, and the cowardice of our leaders have rendered swathes of British society unrecognisable. In this regard we stand apart from our European neighbours for our exceptional naïveté. We all know of Jihadi John, but as the Italian comic Nicholas De Santo remarked “nobody has ever heard of jihadi Pavarotti.”

‘EV Mania May Be Over’ as Car Production Estimates and Executive Enthusiasm Wane: Institute for Energy Research

Electric vehicle (EV) “mania” might be at an end, or, at a minimum, easing down, according to research, as concerns about supply chains, lithium sourcing, inflation, and more affect production capacities while customer demand decelerates globally, as evidenced by industry leader Tesla cutting prices in order to increase sales.

In Europe, EV car manufacturers are slowing production due to uncertainties around lithium supply for batteries as well as electric vehicles proving to be expensive for the middle class, according to a Jan. 18 Institute for Energy Research (IER) post. This year, Europe is expected to output 12 million cars, which is a million less than earlier estimates.

Consumer furor over rising food prices has reignited anger over the infamous bread price-fixing scandal, which became public in 2017 and allegedly involved several major grocers colluding to inflate bread prices.

“It’s time to get answers,” said anti-poverty activist Irene Breckon, 76, of Elliot Lake, Ont. “It’s not right that the poor people are suffering so much more, and the rich people … keep bumping up their prices.”

According to data released Tuesday, grocery prices have climbed by 11 per cent year over year.
