Ukraine war: Could Russia use tactical nuclear weapons?

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has said he’s ready to use nuclear weapons to defend Russian territory, raising the fear he might use a small, or “tactical” nuclear weapon in Ukraine.

US President Joe Biden has warned him that doing so would be the most serious military escalation since World War II.

Who knows? I was convinced Putin would not invade as he seemed to be winning just by posturing.

During the Cold War Soviet subs being stalked by US hunter killers would make a sudden turn and head straight for the American sub, the maneuver was known as the “Crazy Ivan”.

We may have a Crazy Putin.

The U.S. Bishops’ Celebration of Illegal Immigration

What is holy about encouraging people to break just laws?

For decades, the U.S. Catholic bishops have operated like open-borders activists, hectoring Republican politicians for not supporting illegal immigration. Before the sexual abuse scandal erupted in the Church, the bishops were insufferable on this subject. After the scandal, some of them toned down their moralizing in recognition that they had lost any credibility as experts on “justice.” But now they’re back to the cocky clericalism of the 1980s, squandering their authority on a prudential political matter clearly beyond it. They routinely portray support for illegal immigration as “Catholic teaching.” But it isn’t. The Church has never officially taught that it is “unjust” for a country’s leaders to enforce immigration laws.

Bend, Oregon police defend massive use of red flag law

Red flag laws are a major problem for most in the Second Amendment community. They do a couple of things that create that problem.

For one thing, they take guns without any real due process. Depending on the state, authorized parties can petition the court to take your guns away without you even knowing there’s a hearing. The first you know about it is when law enforcement shows up at your door.

For the hundredy-hundredth time, let me say: the reporting of the US media on the European Right is not to be believed. I don’t say that as a right-winger who gets his nose out of joint when CBS News calls a politician I like “fascist.” I do get my nose out of joint, but that’s my problem. It’s your problem because you depend on the news media to tell you what’s happening in the world, and they are entirely misleading you. You don’t have to see this as a conspiracy; they lie to themselves about what’s going on, because they have been trained to disable their own skeptical instincts when it comes to maintaining the Narrative.

Pink Floyd founder cancels Poland concerts after war remarks

Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters has canceled concerts planned in Poland amid outrage over his stance on Russia’s war against Ukraine, Polish media reported Saturday.

An official with the Tauron Arena in Krakow, where Waters was scheduled to perform two concerts in April, said they would no longer take place.

“Roger Waters’ manager decided to withdraw … without giving any reason,” Lukasz Pytko from Tauron Arena Krakow said Saturday in comments carried by Polish media outlets.

Majority of Conservative voters support defunding the CBC — but not attacks on media

A clear majority of Conservative supporters strongly support taking public funds away from the CBC — but fewer support attacks on journalists, a Mainstreet poll suggests.

Several prominent Conservatives, including leader Pierre Poilievre and former leader Erin O’Toole, have called for deeply cutting or completely defunding the CBC.

In 2021, government grants made up about 60 per cent of the CBC’s revenue.

The fall session of Parliament kicked off this week, as Members of Parliament flooded into the Ottawa airport from all corners of the country in anticipation of taking their seats in the House of Commons.

While the faceoff between newly minted Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and Justin Trudeau was supposed to be the main attraction, Thursday’s Question Period failed to garner anywhere near as much attention as a video of the Prime Minister belting out Bohemian Rhapsody, on the eve of the Queen’s funeral in England.

To say outrage ensued over the 14 second video, frankly, would be an understatement.

Sundance Liked Her Documentary on Terrorism, Until Muslim Critics Didn’t

The film festival gave Meg Smaker’s “Jihad Rehab” a coveted spot in its 2022 lineup, but apologized after an outcry over her race and her approach.

Meg Smaker felt exhilarated last November. After 16 months filming inside a Saudi rehabilitation center for accused terrorists, she learned that her documentary “Jihad Rehab” was invited to the 2022 Sundance Festival, one of the most prestigious showcases in the world.

Film critics warned that conservatives might bridle at these human portraits, but reviews after the festival’s screening were strong.

“The absence of absolutes is what’s most enriching,” The Guardian stated, adding, “This is a movie for intelligent people looking to have their preconceived notions challenged.” Variety wrote:

The film “feels like a miracle and an interrogative act of defiance.”

But attacks would come from the left, not the right. Arab and Muslim filmmakers and their white supporters accused Ms. Smaker of Islamophobia and American propaganda. Some suggested her race was disqualifying, a white woman who presumed to tell the story of Arab men.

But what is it for? This is the question that the media in Russia, China, Iran and half a dozen countries were posing all last week in the wake of a summit in Samarkand that brought their leaders together as members or aspiring members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

The Russian media, echoing President Vladimir Putin’s speech at the summit, say the SCO is designed to end “the unipolar world “by creating a “multipolar system”.

The Chinese media offer a different version. The SCO is meant to offer a new political system for the whole world as an alternative to the Western democratic model.
