The media’s betrayal of the poor

At the end of his career, in his 1907 retirement speech, Joseph Pulitzer wrote up his credo for journalism. He was adamant about the thing that made it a noble profession, one worth dedicating your life to: “Never lack sympathy with the poor.”

Living in the Gilded Age, there were plenty of poor people for journalists to sympathise with — the streets were teeming with working-class Americans who had been cast out of the comforts enjoyed by the obscenely wealthy industrialists. You might think modern-day America — a new Gilded Age in which the gap between the rich and the poor is wider than it has been in living memory — would provide another such opportunity for American journalists to sympathise with the lower classes. You would be wrong.

Loudoun County school board meeting

‘You’re all busted’

Attend a Loudoun County school board meeting in Virginia, and you will find it almost as locked down as the US Capitol post-January 6. Police cars line the streets and dozens of security personnel post up inside the building. I attended the most recent meeting on Tuesday as media and was subject to a thorough bag check and extensive metal scanning. Residents who wish to speak at meetings are not even allowed in the building until they are in the next group of ten scheduled to appear, and they are not allowed to bring in bags or purses.

Indigenous leaders call for apology, compensation from Pope amid possible Canadian visit

TORONTO — While Pope Francis may visit Canada amid calls for him to apologize for the Catholic Church’s role in residential schools, Indigenous leaders say his visit must be “more than a gesture” in order to have an impact on reconciliation.

The Vatican said in a statement Wednesday that Pope Francis is willing to visit Canada, after the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops invited him in the “context of the long-standing pastoral process of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.”

The statement said the Pope indicated his “willingness” to do so at an undetermined date.

There’s a crisis in San Francisco. Homelessness has skyrocketed and drug use is rampant.

Michael Shellenberger moved to San Francisco in 1993 to work on liberal causes, and even spent time working for George Soros’ foundation. He advocated the decriminalization of drugs and promoted drug treatment programs. But, Shellenberger says, he began to worry when he saw the number of drug overdose deaths in America rise from 17,000 in 2000 to more than 70,000 by 2017.

“Clearly, we are in the midst of a massive drug crisis,” Shellenberger says, “and it felt like nobody was offering a particularly clear explanation of it or offering very good solutions.”

New details revealed in ‘Rust’ shooting investigation

SANTA FE, N.M. — The assistant director who handed Alec Baldwin the prop gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and the production’s armorer did not appear to check the firearm properly, new documents reveal.

“Rust” assistant director David Halls said he picked up the gun and brought it over to the production’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez, to be checked before resuming rehearsal the day of the fatal incident on the Santa Fe, New Mexico, production, according to a search warrant released Wednesday.

Woke claim that ‘rational thinking’ is a white male thing is both insulting and absurd

George Orwell famously said that “there are some ideas so absurd that only an intellectual could believe them.”

His adage now applies to anyone associated with academia in any capacity.

The New York Times ran a report the other day on the canceling of University of Chicago geophysicist Dorian Abbot for his dissenting views on affirmative action. The paper quoted a Williams College geosciences professor, Phoebe A. Cohen, who supports Abbot’s shunning. She explained her dim view of academic freedom thusly: “This idea of intellectual debate and rigor as the pinnacle of intellectualism comes from a world in which white men dominated.”

Jerusalem Consulate: A Nail in the Coffin of Peace

Only a few months ago, US President Joe Biden betrayed a US ally by withdrawing forces from Afghanistan, bringing down the government in Kabul and consigning the country to the bitter depredations of Taliban terrorists. Now he is winding up to betray another, much closer ally — Israel.

Biden plans to open a consulate in Jerusalem. This may seem like just another diplomatic facility to issue visas, promote trade and take care of US citizens, with no greater consequence than the US consulate in Edinburgh, UK. But it is far more than a mere office for paper-shuffling diplomats. It amounts to a de facto US embassy to the Palestinians on Israeli territory. Its true purpose is to undermine Israeli sovereignty in its own capital city and will jeopardise future prospects for peace between Israel and Palestinian Arabs.

Comedian Dave Chappelle said in a video posted Monday that the film industry has blacklisted his new documentary, “Untitled,” amid controversy from his latest Netflix special, “The Closer.”

Chappelle posted a video on Instagram on Monday firing back at his critics and claiming that the backlash against him was being driven by corporations with little to do with the LGBT community. Chappelle has taken heat in recent weeks over jokes about gender and his proclamation to be “team TERF” in “The Closer.”

Americans have been horrified to learn about sadistic experiments on dogs funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) directed by Anthony Fauci.

A group called the White Coat Waste Project, which is devoted to exposing  and ending wasteful government spending on animal experimentation, reported that a lab in Tunisia conducted NIAID-funded experiments in which beagles were killed by being eaten alive by sand fleas.
