Wealthy Californians splash out on fines to water gardens during drought

Jim Hampton gazes proudly at his finely manicured lawn and the flourishing plants outside his home in the affluent southern Californian city of Agoura Hills.

For the 60-year-old automation engineer, his garden represents the fruits of a long career.

However, if local officials have their way his green grass — and that of his neighbours — may soon wither amid a historic drought that has ravaged the American West.

Elsewhere … U.K. movement No Mow May gains traction across Canada as municipalities urge residents to let their grass grow

On recent morning walks, City of Fredericton Councillor Kevin Darrah has found his neighbours’ lawns to be increasingly unkempt. They match the weedy pastures around the maritime capital’s water towers, fire stations, arenas, waterfront trail system and public parks.

But the overgrowth is by design: Fredericton is one of several Canadian Municipalities engaging in No Mow May, a grassroots movement encouraging people to keep their mowers retired until June, and allow flora to grow to give pollinators such as bees, butterflies and beetles better access to nectar early in the year. Darrah, the Chair of the City’s Environmental Stewardship Committee, said Fredericton is keeping 25 per cent of its city-managed lawns uncut for the month, and that many citizens have also chosen to participate.

The daily battle to keep people alive as fentanyl ravages San Francisco’s Tenderloin

It’s 9am in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district and sleeping bodies line the sidewalks as Felanie Castro sets out on her route in Glide Memorial church’s harm reduction van.

Along Ellis Street, hungry people queue up for the church’s daily breakfast of buns, hard-boiled eggs and plastic-wrapped muffins. Down the block, a fire department truck, part of a city response team, awaits the day’s first drug overdose call.

This neighborhood and the adjoining South of Market (SoMa) district have become ground zero in an opioid overdose crisis that is killing thousands of California residents, including many experiencing homelessness. In the past two years, more than 1,300 people have died of overdoses in San Francisco, a rise driven by the emergence of fentanyl, a super-potent synthetic opioid that’s 50 times stronger than heroin. Nearly half of those deaths have occurred in these two hard-hit neighborhoods alone.

The Hierarchy of Oppression

Perhaps the most common conservative reaction to progressive ideas is one of bewilderment. They’re from a different planet, inhabit an alternate universe; they’re insane! Even moderates employ these phrases to express their inability to understand the progressive mentality. And this is so even in regard to problems like crime that traditionally have provided common ground for partisan factions. Thus, the 1994 Crime Bill – also known as the Clinton Crime Bill and the Biden Crime Bill, was passed by an overwhelming bi-partisan majority in Congress.[1] Yet today it is anathema to progressives, who see violent criminals as “victims” of an unjust criminal justice system, and theft as a form of “reparations.” Extreme reversals like this have prompted liberal dissenters like Joe Manchin, Bill Maher and former congressman Harold Ford to express support for conservative concerns that progressives are “out of touch with reality,” and their views “lack common sense.”

CNN Frets That Children Are Being Brainwashed – by Conservatives

Hide your kids – the right-wing children’s entertainment complex is upon us!

Hundreds of righteously concerned parents gathered recently outside the Walt Disney Company’s Burbank, California, headquarters to protest the corporation’s woke stance on gender ideology. The following weekend, Moms For America hosted a rally at Florida’s Disney World for the same reason. Now a mainstream media outlet has finally chimed in to warn its readers about the insidious political indoctrination of children – by conservatives.

Rupa Subramanya: Smearing Pierre Poilievre because many of those at his rallies are white is itself racist

The idea that the rightness of a cause is to be judged by the demographic makeup of those who appear to support it, a common assumption on the left, is itself racist

As Pierre Poilievre crisscrosses Canada, very much the front runner in the Conservative leadership race, he continues to attract large crowds wherever he goes. On April 12, he addressed a large gathering at Spruce Meadows, on the southern edge of Calgary, where around 5,000 people came out to hear him address a range of issues, from pandemic lockdowns and restrictions, to the Freedom Convoy protests, inflation and bitcoin.

WAPO draws attention to left wing lunatics in failed hit piece on Libs of TikTok

This comes to us via Twitchy – Serial troll and all-around harpy from Hell Taylor Lorenz doxxes @LibsOfTikTok not even a MONTH after weepy appearance on MSNBC playing the victim

Meet the woman behind Libs of TikTok, secretly fueling the right’s outrage machine

On March 8, a Twitter account called Libs of TikTok posted a video of a woman teaching sex education to children in Kentucky, calling the woman in the video a “predator.” The next evening, the same clip was featured on Laura Ingraham’s Fox News program, prompting the host to ask, “When did our public schools, any schools, become what are essentially grooming centers for gender identity radicals?”

Libs of TikTok reposts a steady stream of TikTok videos and social media posts, primarily from LGBTQ+ people, often including incendiary framing designed to generate outrage. Videos shared from the account quickly find their way to the most influential names in right-wing media. The account has emerged as a powerful force on the Internet, shaping right-wing media, impacting anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and influencing millions by posting viral videos aimed at inciting outrage among the right.

At 8:15 almost every evening I post a Libs of TikTok vid. She does us an invaluable favour by watching the loons in all their glory and providing us the highlights. Anyone who has seen the vids knows how central to the left are the outright demented.

I guess when you’re owned by one of the world’s plutocrats there is nothing to be done but punch down.

Check out Libs twitter feed, worth your while.

Trickle-Down Racist Antiracism

This reactionary and neo-Confederate return to racial stigmatization and hatred is not going to end well.

Elected governments were rare in the past. They did not appear until over four millennia after civilization first emerged in the Near East. Constitutional systems were fragile at birth. And they are on the wane today. Nation after nation seems to be devolving into autocracy. Multiethnic, multiracial consensual governments have been even more brittle and sporadic in history.

A Shooter Puts Critical Race Theory into Practice

NYC Dems were too busy fighting white supremacy to stop a black supremacist terrorist.

Mayor Eric Adams, who had called white people “crackers”, claimed that he needed his brother to head his security because of an “increase in white supremacy” in New York City.

The New York City Board of Health falsely claimed that racism was a “public health crisis” and a public school told parents to abolish their “whiteness”.

Averting Our Eyes – The New York subway shooter’s delusions were likely fed by the relentless cultivation of racial resentment.

Had a white male entered a New York subway car in a construction vest and gas mask, carrying a hatchet, a 9-millimeter handgun, extended ammo magazines, gasoline, fireworks, and two smoke grenades; had he then shot off at least 33 rounds, hitting ten people, the Biden administration and the media would have immediately raised an alarm about white nationalist violence. The shooter’s race would have led every story about such an attempted massacre; pundits would have immediately speculated about hate crime and domestic terrorism.

They should check in with Justin Trudeau he’s practically an expert in the cultivation of racial resentment.

Jon Stewart vs Andrew Sullivan on the problem with white people

Jon Stewart has a show on Apple TV called “The Problem with Jon Stewart.” It’s basically just “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” minus the accent and with the addition of some guests. Each week, Stewart sets up a new problem which he’s going to tackle. So far this season he’s looked at COVID restrictions, gun control, climate change, the media and this week’s topic: The Problem with White People.

Stewart was always an ass.

When Joy Reid was an anti-gay witch hunter

She claims now to oppose the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law but the 2009 Reid would beg to differ

MSNBC host Joy Reid claims she hates Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill, aimed at stopping public school teachers from teaching young children about sexual orientation and gender identity. But the Joy Reid of 2009 was all about hating on gays and would have championed this bill wholeheartedly.

Inside the Squad’s ‘Putin problem’

It looks the Squad has a Putin problem — as in a reluctance to stand up to the Russian autocrat.

Two of the group’s core members, Reps. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) and Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) were the only two House Democrats to vote against sanctioning Russia’s oil industry, while Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) in the runup to the invasion argued against providing Ukraine with aid.

And, in a now-deleted tweet, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-Bx./Queens) argued that Washington should “avoid sanctions” against Russia as they would “hurt the Ukrainian people” — inadvertently (we hope) echoing the line pushed by RT, the Russian TV outlet, which similarly insists sanctioning Russia is a “threat to Ukraine too.”
