Avi Benlolo: We need some outrage over anti-Semitism in Canada

There is no monopoly on discrimination. In the Jewish world, we have stood up throughout history for freedom and civil rights. Our people have proudly walked with every modern-day liberation movement, including participating in and supporting Martin Luther King Jr. in the civil rights movement, the feminist movement and most recently the LGBTQ2 movement. We are proud leaders in the promotion of social welfare policies and legal and ethical rights. Upholding Jewish values, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, for instance, is fondly remembered for fighting against gender discrimination and became the first tenured female at Columbia Law School.

NDP team up with Liberals

Federal New Democrats are ensuring the survival of a key piece of Liberal legislation aimed at keeping Canada accountable to its target of achieving net-zero carbon-related emissions by mid-century.

Parliamentarians are currently discussing Bill C-12 at a committee voting on a series of changes to the proposed climate law tabled late last year.

If passed, it would see Canada set rolling five-year targets to slash emissions of heat-trapping, climate-change-causing greenhouse gases, stopping in 2050.

US to sue Canada over dairy practices as hopes for better trade relations fade

After a tumultuous four years living next door to Donald Trump, many Canadians had hoped that relations with their closest neighbour would mend under Joe Biden. The former president had slapped tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, threatened levies on the automotive sector, and called the prime minister, Justin Trudeau, “two-faced”.

But in recent weeks, Canadian officials have faced growing tensions with the US under Biden as leaders on both sides confront domestic political challenges.

On Tuesday, the US trade representative, Katherine Tai, announced plans to sue Canada over its controversial dairy practices, accusing the country of breaching the US-Mexico-Canada agreement, the continent’s updated free trade pact.

Veterans Affairs asks for public feedback on Canada’s Afghan war monument

Almost a decade after Canada’s combat operations in Afghanistan ended, Veterans Affairs is asking for public feedback on five design proposals for a national monument to commemorate this country’s longest war.

The veterans department has launched an online survey to allow Canadians to evaluate concept art for the memorial, which is expected to be constructed across from the Canadian War Museum in downtown Ottawa.

Regardless of which design is chosen I’m sure it will be decried as Islamophobic and insufficiently Transgender.

Alberta government introduces ‘turn-off-the-taps’ legislation to counter pipeline opposition

The Alberta government has introduced a revamped version of legislation that had given the province the power to restrict and control shipments of its energy exports as a means to “fight back” against other Canadian jurisdictions that oppose pipeline projects or otherwise block the province’s oil and natural gas.

The old legislation, which contained a sunset clause, expired last month with nothing immediately lined up to replace it – even though proclaiming the law was a key campaign promise of the governing United Conservative Party. The new version of the province’s “turn-off-the-taps” law will exclude refined products such as gasoline and diesel in a bid to shield it from future Constitutional challenges.

Tickets issued after thousands gather at Toronto beaches over long weekend

Toronto is waking up with a long weekend hangover, with reports of parks trashed and residents, especially those with kids and dogs, kept up for four straight nights by backyard fireworks displays.

Toronto police estimate thousands gathered at Woodbine and Cherry beaches on Sunday night, shooting off fireworks for Victoria Day.

Const. Ed Parks said police received several calls about the gatherings and some people were issued tickets, but it is unclear how many.

Posts on social media show people gathered on the beach watching fireworks as well as garbage strewn across the beaches Monday and Tuesday mornings.
