Justin Trudeau’s on the back foot, the opposition and media are no better. No wonder ruthless authoritarians are treating Canadians like a bunch of dim-witted lumberjacks

On Feb. 21, 2021, 800 days after the Chinese government locked up Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, Don Valley North MP Han Dong, a Liberal, called China’s Toronto Consul General, Han Tao, to discuss the case, which he shouldn’t have done.

Dong testified later that he could not remember the details of the conversation, but a CSIS transcript of the call said that he encouraged the Chinese to keep the two Michaels in jail, because releasing them would help the Conservatives. Two CSIS agents were so rattled by this and upset about Liberal inaction that they told Global News about it. Global ran a story. Dong denied it and sued Global, and on June 21 a judge ruled that the case can proceed, which was bad news for Global.

Is Xenophobia on Chinese Social Media Teaching Real-World Hate?

The video posted last year on Chinese social media showed more than 100 Japanese children, supposedly at an elementary school in Shanghai, gathered in their schoolyard. Chinese subtitles quoted two students leading the group as screaming: “Shanghai is ours. Soon the whole China will be ours, too.”

The messages were alarming and infuriating in China, which Japan invaded during World War II. Except that the scene actually took place at an elementary school in Japan. And the students were not stoking hatred of China; they were swearing an oath to play fair at what looked like a sporting event.

China may be the most Xenophobic state on Earth.

Chinese EVs aren’t just an economic threat – they are a security risk

The Canadian government is considering a surtax to prevent Chinese electric vehicles from flooding the market, just as the U.S. and the European Union have done recently. But there’s much more at stake than just the competitive position of the North American auto industry. Looking back at recent disputes between China and Western democracies, it’s clear that security issues also need to be considered.

Given China’s influence over the Trudeau government I am betting an ineffectual set of measures will be enacted to counter the red tide solely to save face.

New Cuban radar site near US military base could aid China spying – report

Satellite images appear to show that Cuba is building a new radar site likely to be capable of spying on the US’s nearby Guantánamo Bay naval base, in the latest upgrade to the country’s surveillance capabilities long thought to be linked to China.

The base, under construction since 2021 but previously not publicly reported, is east of the city of Santiago de Cuba near the El Salao neighborhood, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) said in a report published on Monday and later referenced by the Wall Street Journal.

Cuban vice foreign minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio denied that Cuba was harboring Chinese military interests on the island.

Chinese woman arrested after allegedly trying to smuggle 29 turtles into Canada

A woman from China has been arrested at a Vermont lake bordering Quebec for trying to smuggle 29 eastern box turtles, a protected species, into Canada by kayak, according to Border Patrol agents.

The agents searched her heavy duffle bag and found 29 live eastern box turtles individually wrapped in socks, the affidavit states. Eastern box turtles are known to be sold on the Chinese black market for $1,000 each, according to the affidavit.

They’re like Locusts.

TikTok, ByteDance Expand Presence in Canada as US Threatens Ban Over Security Concerns

TikTok is speeding up transfer of its China-based employees to Canada and other overseas positions as the social media giant faces increasing pressure from the United States to divest from its parent company, ByteDance, over security concerns.

TikTok is offering to approximately double the salaries and to provide housing subsidies for employees in technical and analytical roles if they transfer overseas, according to a January report by Chinese state-owned media Jiemian News.

The Great China Shell Game: The U.S. Must Stop Playing Sanctions Whack-A-Mole with the CCP

The larger Chinese banks, in response to stern U.S. warnings, have this year been exiting transactions involving Russia.

Are America’s sanctions efforts finally working?

No. Beijing is merely shifting transactions to smaller banks and non-banking channels. China, to help Russia’s war effort in Ukraine, is employing a decades-old stratagem: the shell game.

At best, America’s sanctions are crimping the fast-growing China-Russia trade, not ending it.

Did Justin Trudeau cover up the Chinese spy scandal?

The Liberal Party has failed to protect Canada

Did the Chinese Communist Party interfere in the past two Canadian elections? A fantastic series of leaks from Canada’s Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) over the winter of 2022/23 suggests so. The leaks point to a vast CCP campaign of political interference that Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government allegedly covered up. It has been a major scandal: a Liberal MP named Han Dong was forced to resign from his party in the aftermath, and reports suggest that a “network” of two dozen candidates and staffers were affected.

Head of National Microbiology Lab resigns in wake of scientist security scandal

The head of the National Microbiology Lab (NML) in Winnipeg says he is stepping down to continue his medical work and take a position at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba, CBC News has learned.

Since 2020, Dr. Guillaume Poliquin has overseen Canada’s only Level 4 virology facility, which is equipped to deal with the most serious and deadly human and animal diseases.

Poliquin announced his resignation to staff in an internal email on Tuesday.

With so little public information it isn’t hard to imagine this was much worse than we know.

The World’s Most Dangerous Delusion: Biden Thinks China Wants Stability

“It’s very hard for China to take certain steps without harming its own economy,” U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said on June 12. “And I think we now understand that economic performance is central right now to what is important to President Xi.”

“Campbell,” Reuters reported, “told Washington’s Stimson Center think tank China needed to reassure investors and others that it has a plan for its economy and would not be looking to create frictions that could escalate in unpredictable and dangerous ways.”

‘Rolling spy vans’? Canada weighs possible security threat of Chinese EVs

Canada is weighing whether to slap tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles to stop cheap EVs from flooding the market. But Ottawa – which has pumped billions of dollars worth of subsidies into the Canadian EV industry – says its concerns are not only economic.

“We’re also looking at the national security aspect of this; the security aspect including cybersecurity, when it comes to Chinese exports of high technology items, like EVs,” Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said Monday.

Every modern vehicle is designed to spy on you personally.

Ford filed a patent for a “remote repossession” capability. You can bet the government approves.

WEF in China: Global economy in a slump

For a few days, a subway station in Dalian, China, will be renamed. Instead of simply Congress Center it is now plastered with huge decals that say “Annual Meeting of the New Champions.”

Outside, the streets and sidewalks are sparkling clean, access roads all around have been cleared far and wide. Colorful flags flutter in the wind.

Dalian, a city on the Yellow Sea in northeast China, is the proud host of this year’s Summer Davos, as the meeting is more commonly known.

I wonder if Freeland will attend.

Canada takes step toward tariffs on Chinese EVs by announcing consultation

The federal government took a step Monday toward imposing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle imports by announcing a 30-day consultation period to examine Beijing’s trade practices in the EV sector.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland made the announcement in Vaughan, Ont. She said that the consultations, which begin July 2, will help the government craft its response to Beijing.

I bet the initial consultation recommends additional consultation ad infinitum.
