Facebook apologises for banning users from mentioning National Trust beauty spot Devil’s Dyke after branding it ‘hate speech’

Facebook has apologised for issuing bans to people who mentioned the name of a Sussex beauty spot, branding it ‘hate speech’.

Users on community group Brighton People had been referring to Devil’s Dyke, a well known tourist attraction which has attracted visitors since the Victorian times.

But while they were innocently chatting about the spot, which has roads, pubs, restaurants and parks named after it, they say Facebook threatened them with bans if they continue to refer to it by its name, receiving messages suggesting they were using hate speech.

Facebook BANS UK Socialist Workers Party, revives account with ‘no explanation’ as dozens of local pages remain suspended

The UK’s Socialist Workers Party was temporarily booted from Facebook, restored hours later with no explanation given for what the left-wing org deemed a “silencing of political activists.” Dozens of related pages remain banned.
The party said its main account, as well as its local pages, were deactivated on Friday, calling the move an “attack” while demanding the profiles be “reinstated immediately.”

“Facebook has shut down the accounts of one of the biggest left wing organisations in Britain,” the SWP said in a press release, adding that “dozens of leading SWP activists” were simultaneously kicked off the platform.

Money From Facebook’s Zuckerberg Used to Undermine Election, Violate Law: Report

Hundreds of millions of dollars from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg were used to violate election laws, according to a new report.

The Amistad Project of the Thomas More Society, a national constitutional litigation organization, released the 39-page report, alleging that Zuckerberg’s $500 million given to election officials was used to treat voters unequally and to improperly influence the election for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

Facebook closes fake accounts linked to French military and Russia

Facebook said Tuesday that it had removed two networks based in Russia and one linked to the French military, accusing them of carrying out interference campaigns in Africa.

Two networks running multiple Facebook accounts were assigned to people associated with the Russian Internet Research Agency, and the third had “links to individuals associated with French military,” the social media platform said.

All three were removed from the site for breaking its policy against foreign or government interference, Facebook said, adding that the networks targeted countries mainly in north Africa and some in the Middle East.

Facebook faces most serious breakup threat yet from lawsuits

The twin lawsuits filed against Facebook this week by the government and more than 40 attorneys general are the most serious effort to break the social media giant up to date.

The cases, which differ slightly, focus on the allegation that Facebook made acquisitions in an effort to decrease competition in the social network marketplace and ultimately worsened the quality of options available to consumers.

The Federal Trade Commission and 48 state and territory attorneys general propose a solution to that issue: divestiture.

The attorney general of New York has filed a massive antitrust lawsuit against Facebook, seeking to force a divestiture of acquisitions such as Instagram and WhatsApp.

The suit filed on Wednesday in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia is spearheaded by New York Attorney General Letitia James, and joined by 47 other state attorneys general.
