Ontario has ‘eliminated all our defences’ against COVID subvariant: epidemiologist

An infectious disease expert says “there’s no doubt” a sixth wave of COVID-19 is sweeping across Ontario, and it’s being driven by the highly transmissible BA.2 subvariant at the same time restrictions have been lifted across the province.

“We’ve opened the doors to a new variant,” Colin Furness, an expert in infectious disease epidemiology from the University of Toronto, told CTV National News. “Then eliminated all of our defences.”

Ontario has entered the sixth COVID-19 wave, doctors say

After more than two years fighting COVID-19, some medical experts in Ontario say the province has entered a sixth wave.

Two years of lockdowns has changed everything

“Think back to the America you grew up in. There were 3 things you knew about that country: It was a free country. It was a middle-class country, it was defined by small business. And it was a Constitutional country. Our politicians were limited by the guard rails in our founding documents, they couldn’t go past that. So, it was a happy place.”

Governments across the globe have taken extreme measures over the past two years to combat COVID-19. The rationale is always the same: This is an emergency. But do governments understand the implications of this claim? A perpetual state of crisis cannot be a stable basis for civil government. Politicians who continually appeal to this justification may soon find they have unleashed forces beyond their control.

Coronaviruses are ‘clever’: Evolutionary scenarios for the future of SARS-CoV-2

In the ongoing struggle of SARS-CoV-2’s genes versus our wits, the virus that causes Covid-19 relentlessly probes human defenses with new genetic gambits. New variants of this coronavirus with increasing transmissibility have sprung up every few months, a scenario that is likely to continue.

Random mutations are random – unless they’re engineered.
