Khan: Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover shows why Canada must regulate social media now

Voices from racialized communities, anti-racism activists and the political left are saying that restrictions must be maintained on those voices that use the platform to propagate hate, xenophobia and disinformation. Many on the political right, free-speech extremists and far-right voices are rejoicing at the prospect that Twitter under Musk’s ownership will become a space for unrestricted speech, where anything one can say is acceptable.

That is a lie: Musk has stated very clearly that he intended to allow all legal speech.

The great American free-speech panic

Elon GIFs | Tenor

Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter has revealed how terrified the elites are of freedom of speech.

Freedom of speech is the ‘dread of tyrants’. That’s how Frederick Douglass, the American abolitionist, statesman and former slave, put it in his seminal 1860 speech, ‘A Plea for Freedom of Speech in Boston’ – taking aim at a racist mob who had shut down an abolitionist meeting and the authorities that had refused to protect it.

The battle lines in America’s free-speech wars are very different today, as of course are the stakes. ‘Slavery cannot tolerate free speech’, thundered Douglass. He saw open discussion as the means to liberation. Today, those who might consider themselves his heirs think you can censor your way to utopia. But one thing at least remains stubbornly the same: more than 160 years later, free speech still fills the American elites with dread.

Has Twitter Been Cooking Their Books?

Has anyone else been suspicious of Twitter’s flip-flop on selling the platform to Elon Musk? I’m sure I’m not the only one. I always felt that Twitter was far less valuable than what Musk was offering and was particularly surprised when a Twitter board member, Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud, who is also one of Twitter’s largest shareholders, said that he’d reject Musk’s offer because it was too low.

Human Rights Watch, ACLU, Amnesty Intl. Clutch Their Pearls in Horror At Elon Musk’s Purchase of Twitter

They hate free speech and want you to think it’s dangerous.

There has been one salutary effect of the weeks-long efforts of Elon Musk to gain control of Twitter, and the debate over the freedom of speech that ensued: now the Left’s foremost individuals and institutions are out in the open about their hatred for the freedom of speech. The authoritarian heart of the Left has been exposed, as has their war against the foundational principle of any free society: the right to express oneself even if one’s opinions don’t coincide with those of the powerful and/or moneyed elites. Barack and Hillary hate the freedom of speech and want you to think it’s a dangerous toy, too dangerous for you to play with. And now three pillars of the unctuous and hypocritical Leftist “human rights” establishment, Human Rights Watch (HRW), Amnesty International, and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), have come out against it as well.

Diversity, Free Speech, and the ‘Woke’ Assault on America

We are living in Orwellian times.

Tech plutocrat Elon Musk announces he is buying Twitter to liberate this “virtual town square” from one-sided political censorship – and he is met with hysterical charges that he is attacking free speech. A woman who reposts TikTok videos of “woke” teachers bragging about their sexualize of children in their classrooms, is attacked by a Washington Post reporter who harasses the woman’s family in order to silence an enemy of “free speech” and purveyor of “hate” – just days after the reporter appeared in a video and bursts into tears over getting the same treatment she later inflicts on the anonymous creator of Libs on TikTok.

Musk’s Free Speech Crusade

Ending Big Tech censorship at Twitter will be trickier than it sounds, but it’s worth the struggle.

For Elon Musk, coming up with $44 billion was the easy part. What comes next, less so.

To the delight of many conservatives, Musk has purchased Twitter and announced that he will make the platform “an arena for free speech.” One can almost picture him storming into Twitter HQ, marching downstairs, and kicking in the rusty door to the content-moderation boiler room. Steam blows and bells ring as, with a mighty tug, he dislodges a giant iron lever from the “Less Speech” setting and wrenches it into the “More Speech” position. After a few more adjustments—a crank down on the “Spam” knob, a flip onward of the “Edit Tweet” switch—he returns to the lobby, instructs the astonished employees to stay out of the basement, and leaves.

The Real Reason Elon Musk Offends the Left

Elon Musk bought Twitter. Conservatives appear cautiously optimistic about the platform’s future, with several prominent commentators noting that their follower counts rose significantly overnight. Still, some are concerned that Musk is not a conservative. They point to his public positions on climate change and support for left-wing organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Terence Corcoran: You pick — the old CBC or Musk’s new Twitter

Among leftist hysterics over Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter, one of the standouts has been Canada’s own national broadcaster. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s flagship news show, The National, opened Monday night with a report that portrayed Musk’s move as a harbinger of ideological bias and warped perspectives. This from one of the most warped and biased media in Canada, creating the potential for a Great Canadian Media Standoff. Who will Canadians pick — the old CBC or Musk’s new Twitter?

‘Burning the evidence before the new boss starts?’: Don Jnr and right wingers see giant leaps in their Twitter followers after Musk bid was accepted – as Obama and left wingers lose huge numbers

Prominent right-wing tweeters have seen their follower counts shoot up since Elon Musk took over, sparking claims their accounts had been suppressed by woke Twitter staffers.

Meanwhile, leading left-wing figures including Barack Obama as well as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have seen huge slumps since news of Musk’s purchase.

Donald Trump Jr, who has 7.7 million followers, saw his followers surge by 87,296 on Tuesday and suggested the increase was due to an algorithm tweak targeting prominent conservative voices ahead of Musk’s arrival.

Twitter, Facebook, Netflix, and the Myth of Permanent Platform Power

Today’s big powerful companies could become tomorrow’s also-rans, no government intervention required.

Twitter is changing ownership, following a purchase by Elon Musk, who has explicitly  said he intends to reorient the company’s approach to online speech. Netflix, whose business model has long been predicated on sky’s-the-limit growth, is bleeding subscribers. CNN+, a massively expensive project from what was once a dominant force in TV news, is shutting down a month after its launch. Facebook is losing regular users and taking a huge financial hit because of changes in the mobile ad space. Google is no longer the world’s most popular website.

No, the liberals will not leave Twitter

The hyper-partisans of the cultural hegemony won’t leave Twitter. They need to access its casual users for their strategy to be successful.

With the recent acquisition of the world’s largest social media platform by billionaire Elon Musk, the battle cry of “I’m leaving Twitter” has rapidly spread among the bluecheck caste. The chances of this actually manifesting in any notable number of people jumping ship are next to zero. They aren’t going to move to another site, and they especially will not be moving to the much-touted Mastodon, the domain of basement-bound tech nerds so complex as to be rendered effectively useless to anyone without an MA in Programming.

Indeed, the impossibility of migrating from the Big Tech titans has already played out in the likes of Gab, Parler and Gettr. Social media falls strictly under the economic concept of a natural monopoly, its utility and functionality entirely derived from everyone sharing the same platform to maximise reach and facilitate wider interaction. In the same way there are not many competing railways built along the same routes, there will not be many competing Twitters.
