Ex-Proud Boys leader arrested outside US Capitol

The former leader of the far-right Proud Boys was arrested on Friday outside the US Capitol, police said.

Enrique Tarrio, who was pardoned by President Donald Trump for his role in the 6 January 2021 riot at the US Capitol, was arrested not long after holding a news conference on Friday.

Protesters attempted to drown out the event, held near the site of the riot, but Tarrio’s remarks to media went ahead as planned.

Trump official says Zelenskyy will sign US minerals deal ‘in the very short term’

The White House national security adviser, Mike Waltz, said on Friday that the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, was expected to sign a minerals agreement with the United States imminently, as part of broader negotiations to end the war with Russia.

“Here’s the bottom line: President Zelenskyy is going to sign that deal, and you will see that in the very short term,” Waltz said during remarks at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

The statement comes amid an increasingly public dispute between Zelenskyy and Donald Trump, with Waltz telling Fox News this week that the Ukrainian leader needed to “tone it down” and sign the proposed agreement.

Canadians Satisfied With Their Quality of Life Plunges Further

Canada’s sharp policy turns have dramatically impacted the quality of life. Statistics Canada (Stat Can) data reveals that most people are highly satisfied with life and that share was rising in Q4 2024… but only for seniors 65 and older. The general sentiment in the country continued to erode, especially amongst the critical demographics of Core Aged workers and recent immigrants. A brief period of predatory policies appears to be setting up long-term dest   abilization for the country’s economic future.

Is the NDP in trouble? Party faces an uphill battle if snap election is called

The 2025 federal election seemed to have all the makings of a breakthrough for Canada’s New Democratic Party.

Polling shows voters want change. The Liberal Party is leaderless. Plus, those vying to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have promised policies that would move the party back to the political centre, leaving the NDP to pursue progressive policies like taxing the wealthy.

But at this point, at least, many things don’t seem to be working in their favour.

The NDP is tanking thanks to Singh who has managed to make himself as despised as Trudeau.

Pope remains in ‘critical’ condition after ‘respiratory crisis’

Pope Francis’s condition continues to be “critical” after suffering a “prolonged asthma-like respiratory crisis” earlier on Saturday, the Vatican has said.

The pontiff is “more unwell than yesterday” and had received blood transfusions, the statement said.

The Vatican said the 88-year-old was alert and in his armchair, but required a “high flow” of oxygen and his prognosis “remains guarded”.

The Pope is being treated for pneumonia in both lungs at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome.

WARMINGTON: After cancelling Macdonald, Ryerson and Cherry, mob now after the Great One

As people line up to try to cancel the Great One, the hockey legend has Grapes in his corner.

It’s kind of fitting the man voted in a CBC poll as the 7th greatest Canadian has the back of the person from that same poll who was voted the 10th greatest Canuck.

I blame the Liberal Party and their media.

Trump says Starmer and Macron ‘haven’t done anything’ to end Ukraine war

US President Donald Trump has said French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer “haven’t done anything” to end the war in Ukraine, ahead of their visits to the White House next week.

Trump also said Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky had “no cards” in peace negotiations, adding: “I don’t think he’s very important to be in meetings.”

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the UK, France and other allies have been supplying Kyiv with weapons and other aid.

Donald Trump is following through on long-promised policies – our leaders are still unprepared

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. It’s one of the oldest pieces of homespun wisdom in the book, but rarely is it practised. History is littered with examples of failure to prepare. Instead, we are much more likely simply to hope for the best. Sometimes it works out; often it doesn’t.

Nobody can say they weren’t warned. Donald Trump has never made any secret of his sympathies for Vladimir Putin. Settling the war in Ukraine was one of his promises while campaigning to be US president, and he has long warned fellow members of Nato that they need to stop sponging off America and take better care of their own defences.

And yet the spectacle of Trump actually doing what he said he was going to do has still taken European leaders entirely by surprise. They’ve been caught with their trousers down, woefully unprepared for the extreme security challenges that Trump’s actions pose. Having shamelessly milked the post-Cold War “peace dividend”, they find themselves naked before the storm.

Carney and Freeland’s friendly decades-long rivalry comes to a head as Liberal leadership vote nears

The Liberal leadership debates next week will feature something that has been notably absent from the contest so far: Mark Carney and Chrystia Freeland taking direct swings at each other.

The two leading contenders to replace Justin Trudeau and become Canada’s next prime minister have, until now, avoided going toe to toe, or talking much about each other at all. But on Monday and Tuesday, in both official languages, they will be forced into very visible opposition on the same debate stage, highlighting a curiosity of this race: The two are – or were – friends with each other.

Being a good candidate for Liberal Party leader means bad news for Canada.

Trump Fires Joint Chiefs Chairman Amid Flurry of Dismissals at Pentagon

Soldier of Woke

President Trump fired the country’s senior military officer as part of an extraordinary Friday night purge at the Pentagon that injected politics into the selection of the nation’s top military leaders.

Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., a four-star fighter pilot known as C.Q. who became only the second African American to hold the chairman’s job, is to be replaced by a little-known retired three-star Air Force general, Dan Caine, who endeared himself to the president when they met in Iraq six years ago.

In all, six Pentagon officials were fired, including Adm. Lisa Franchetti, the first woman to lead the Navy; Gen. James Slife, the vice chief of the Air Force; and the top lawyers for the Army, Navy and Air Force.

A train through Germany: is Europe’s powerhouse going off the rails?

In the run-up to Sunday’s crucial election, the Guardian took a long journey through Europe’s heartland to talk to voters

Creaking, overcrowded, neglected, Germany’s railways, once a source of national pride, have taken a battering to their image in recent years. Amid wider concerns about the health of Europe’s stagnating largest economy, the state of its trains has become something of a metaphor for a more general sense of malaise.

On Sunday Germans will go to the polls in one of the most important elections in recent times, with an emboldened far right hoping to more than double its share of votes. In the run-up, the Guardian travelled more than 850 miles on trains across Germany to hear what its citizens have to say about the state of their nation.

The Guardian is beside itself with anxiety over the Afd.
