New and old fears at a well-trodden Canada-U.S. border ahead of Trump’s inauguration

Standing in a neighbour’s driveway on Perry Mills Road in Champlain, N.Y., less than a kilometre from the border with Canada, Stephen Phaneuf points to fields and forest behind the small blue home.

“They come out from the fields, out from everywhere,” says Phaneuf, 67, referring to migrants crossing from Canada into the United States, who have been doing so in increasing numbers since 2022.

Phaneuf’s property across the road sits on the banks the Chazy River. Last winter, he said he found a woman and her child sleeping with his pigs in small plastic huts near the road.

New Juicy Details About How Biden Was Forced To Drop Out

A new bombshell report has exposed the intricate behind-the-scenes maneuvering that led to Joe Biden stepping down from the 2024 presidential race. While many assumed the tipping point was Biden’s poor performance during the June CNN debate against Donald Trump, it turns out that the groundwork to push Biden aside had been laid long before.

Banned Russian oil is coming to Canada. Here’s how

Millions of dollars worth of Russian oil is coming into Canada thanks to a loophole in federal sanctions, providing much-needed income for the Kremlin to fuel its ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

CBC News’s visual investigations team, in collaboration with the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), found that since the start of the Ukraine war roughly 2.5 million barrels — or $250 million worth of refined petroleum products like gasoline, diesel and jet fuel — have ended up in Canada.

Suicides, new tactics and propaganda iPads: details from captured North Koreans expose new foe in Ukraine

The news was sensational. It travelled quickly among Ukrainian soldiers fighting in Russia’s Kursk region. “I heard from a friend of a friend,” one officer, Vitalii Ovcharenko, recalled. “This was half an hour after it happened. My friend said: ‘We’ve got a North Korean prisoner! He’s in shock but OK.’ I said: ‘Wow.’” Ovcharenko added: “Everyone wanted a selfie. They wrapped him in a blanket and gave him tea.”

Last week’s capture of two North Korean servicemen was an extraordinary moment in Russia’s bloody war against Ukraine. The Kremlin has taken elaborate steps to conceal the presence of 12,000 elite troops sent in autumn by Pyongyang to Russia. At camps in the Far East they were given Russian equipment: uniforms, rifles and fake military documents.

CBC Laments The Death Of Trudeau’s Carbon Tax Scam

The carbon tax is (nearly) dead. Now what?

It might seem like a distant memory now, but it’s worth remembering that every major federal party ran in 2021 on a platform that included a consumer carbon tax.

Nearly every single Liberal, NDP and Conservative MP who currently sits in the House of Commons — up to and including Pierre Poilievre, who now says Canada needs a “carbon tax election” so he can “axe the tax” — won their seat while carrying a commitment to apply a price on carbon.

Trump illegal migrant raids to start on day one, US media report

Raids to detain and deport migrants living in the US without permission are set to begin on the first full day of the new Trump administration, US media report.

The operations – threatened by Donald Trump’s “border tsar” Tom Homan – could begin in Chicago, a city with a large migrant population, as early as Tuesday, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal say.

Trump has said he will oversee the largest deportation programme in US history.

In an interview with Fox News this week, Homan promised a “big raid” across the country. He has previously said Chicago will be “ground zero” for the mass deportations.

HANNAFORD: Don’t be fooled by Carney’s carefully engineered launch

As campaign launches go, Mark Carney’s entry into the lists could have been more professional.

It did not look well on somebody who aspires as putative prime minister to represent all Canadians, that the people working on his behalf excluded journalists whose wages aren’t paid by the government. And whose bright idea was it to rip off a debt collection agency’s logo for the campaign theme? Like Canadians aren’t already so indebted that they don’t answer numbers they don’t recognize? We call that having a tin ear.

Sharing a few drams leads to £158,914 whisky bar bill

A bar bill of £158,914 is rather steep for 101 drams of whisky. And the tipplers celebrating at a five-star Highlands hotel didn’t even wait for Hogmanay.

The receipt posted on social media shows a guest at The Fife Arms in the Aberdeenshire village of Braemar bought the rounds of scotch, the equivalent of three-and-a-half bottles, on December 30.

It appears that the group was large. The receipt showed two orders for a 15-dram round of separate whiskies. So they would have spent more than £10,000 each on an average 6.7 drams per person.

Top Canadian banks quit Carney’s global climate scam ahead of Trump inauguration

TORONTO (Reuters) -Four of Canada’s biggest lenders said on Friday they were withdrawing from a global banking sector climate coalition, joining six major U.S. banks.

The departures from the Net-Zero Banking Alliance began with Goldman Sachs’ announcement on Dec. 6 and come ahead of Donald Trump’s return to the White House next week. Trump has been critical of efforts by governments to prescribe climate-change policies.

The four Canadian banks are TD Bank, Bank of Montreal, National Bank of Canada and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC).

The Net-Zero Banking Alliance, a UN-sponsored initiative set up by former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney, was launched in 2021 to encourage financial institutions to limit the effects of climate change and push toward achieving net-zero emissions.

Guardian accused of using AI to help produce stories during strikes

The Guardian has been accused of using artificial intelligence (AI) to help strike-breakers produce stories during recent walkouts.

The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) said it was “deeply disturbed” to discover that AI had been deployed to assist working staff during last month’s strikes.

The Guardian offered non-striking staff AI to help generate headlines for stories, though the tools do not generate the main body of text.
