Few places on earth are more dismal than steel towns without steel. Once an industrial powerhouse, Rotherham, in Yorkshire, England, is now an industrial wasteland, with an inspissated gloom that hangs over it (or, at least, did when I stayed there for a few weeks 15 years ago), doubtless much as a pall of real pollution hung over it in the days when it was a great manufacturing center.
A little Ramadan reading.

OTTAWA – The Prime Minister’s Office says Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, stayed in a $6,000 per night hotel suite while attending the funeral for Queen Elizabeth II.
The stay at the Corinthia London hotel became the subject of public debate last fall when media honed in on the details of the $400,000 trip, after obtaining documents through access-to-information requests.

Some scientists warn that the studies are an ‘extinction-level risk’
If someone had asked you in winter 2019 your views on gain-of-function research, you would likely have given them a blank look. But since the Covid pandemic, and with the Wall Street Journal revealing in February that the US Department of Energy now thinks Covid-19 is likely to have come from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, gain-of-function research — often conducted to make viruses more infectious and more deadly — is a matter of enormous significance and should be at the forefront of a national conversation about the very real risks it poses.

… The increase was in part fuelled by government efforts to recruit migrants to the country to ease labour shortages, Statistics Canada said.
The country also depends on migration to support an ageing population.
But Statistics Canada said the surge in the number of permanent and temporary immigrants could “also represent additional challenges for some regions of the country related to housing, infrastructure and transportation, and service delivery to the population”.
The last sentence is true, everything else is just a lie to cover for the greed of the corporate class.

It turns out that the disruption by several dozen Stanford University law school students of a speech to be given by federal judge Kyle Duncan was not a spontaneous exercise of freedom to protest.
It was a well-planned and carefully orchestrated effort to prevent other Stanford students from hearing the judge’s conservative views. The disruption was organized by the local chapter of National Lawyers Guild as part of a nationwide effort to suppress conservative speech. Although not all the participants were associated with the NLG, the main organizers were. The Guild praised “every single person” who participated in the disruption, and called it “Stanford Law School at its best,” suggesting it would confront “judicial architects of systems of oppression” with “social consequences for their actions.” Here the consequences went beyond “social” to censorial.
Illinois mother, Brette Smith, filed a Title IX lawsuit after one of her Twitter posts went viral resulting in her and her 16-year-old daughter being “doxed” and “threatened.” The lawsuit attacks the child’s high school who enabled ample bullying and threats according to CatholicVote.
Smith, a former Democrat posted the tweet back in September 2022 explaining that her daughter Anna, was embracing her actual, biological identity as a female. Her words included that she’d “left the cult” of the delusional sense of self identity. Praise God!

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis reportedly helped cancel a local school’s “Drag & Donuts” event after the state’s department of education expressed concern over the event.
The event, originally scheduled to take place at Boone High School in Orlando, Florida, was set to feature drag queen “Momma” Ashley Rose,” according to a flyer from the school’s Queer and Ally Alliance Club.
Why are grown men demanding to dance in front of children?

Former prime minister Stephen Harper says Canada is “badly” in need of a “Conservative renaissance” as the movement’s grassroots gather in Ottawa.
In a rare public speech, Harper reminisced about the early days of the Reform Party and suggested a similarly insurgent movement is required in Canadian politics today.

Yesterday, about 50 AI-generated images imagining what former President Donald Trump’s arrest would look like spread across Twitter. The images caused confusion for some users because the Midjourney v5 engine used to create them generates such realistic-looking content.
Today, the Midjourney user behind the images—Bellingcat founder Eliot Higgins—alleged to Buzzfeed News that he was banned from Midjourney over the images. Buzzfeed also reported that Midjourney has banned the word “arrest” from being used in text prompts to generate images.

Foreign mothers of Canadian children seek escape from detention camp
A group of lawyers is racing against the clock to get Canadian children and their foreign-born mothers onto a plane that will soon be dispatched to repatriate detainees from prison camps in northeast Syria.
According to lawyers on the case, the repatriation flight is “imminent” and could arrive within a few short weeks if not days. In November, Global Affairs Canada agreed to bring home 26 Canadian women and children.
Not our problem.

“I’m just going to warn you upfront that there is some very disturbing content coming your way here, so if you tend to become queasy you might want to give this a pass. The story that’s been going viral on social media this week involves Jazz Jennings, the transgender star of the reality TV series “I am Jazz.”

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its supporters have long been strategic about using allegations of racism as a shield to prevent the Canadian government from fighting foreign interference. Canadian elites who parrot Beijing’s lines are falling squarely into its trap.
Junior’s guilt is evident, he is unwilling to provide a simple response to a simple question. Canadians are not allowed to know what Justin knows.
The resignation of MP Han Dong from the Liberal caucus has put more pressure on the Liberals to call a public inquiry on election interference. We asked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau whether he was made aware of interference during the most recent election. #cdnpoli pic.twitter.com/Z469H7LwdX

HUNTER: Bullets and bail Toronto’s cocktail of choice
One kid goes to the morgue, another replaces him on the street.
Bail. Street. Repeat. That’s the deal. It’s Toronto’s favourite cocktail.
But for far too many, the morgue has become the ‘do not pass Go’ on life’s Monopoly board.
