On Pelosi: We’re not falling for the “Right Wing Terrorist in the Tailpipe” joke

Dear Mid-Term 2022 voter – this is a public service announcement. The rush to blame the Right for words = violence in the aftermath of the awful attack on Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul is looking even more cynical than it usually is when they whip out the blame card, so please hold your judgment for a day or so. Events and reports from the scene are shifting rapidly. The possibility the cynical Democratic card is being played more as a distraction from the true situation, vice an accusation of fault, looks stronger every passing hour.

Like I said about Elon – Watch what he does not what he says – Elon Musk deletes tweet linking conspiracy theory to Paul Pelosi attack

Adam Pankratz: How long until anti-oil art vandalism turns to real violence?

Two entitled Stop Oil activists continued the group’s cunning plan to draw attention to our fossil fuel dependence by vandalizing a priceless Vermeer, last week. The video, captured at the museum in The Hague, includes one of the protesters trying to glue his head to the painting, while another poured a can of tomato soup on him. The reaction of the museum visitors demonstrates just how well the message of the climate crusaders is landing: cries of “stupid,” “shame,” and “obscene,” along with an admonition for the perpetrators to “shut the f— up” can be heard from those witnessing the act. While I won’t explicitly endorse vulgarity and insult, I must say that my sympathies here lie unequivocally with the appalled bystanders.

Already has in Canada. and still no arrests I am aware of in the Coastal GasLink terror attack.

Experts fear rising global ‘incel’ culture could provoke terrorism

Almost 1,000 references to dehumanising misogyny or violent action are recorded each day in the “incelosphere” as the toxicity of male supremacist content continues to intensify.

Analysis of the incel movement found that online references to inflicting violence and extremely degrading language on dedicated incel forums are running eight times higher than in 2016, when researchers first began tracking misogynist content on the internet.

Academics from the University of Exeter also noted an increasing overlap between incel followers and the far right, with online algorithms blamed for pushing young boys towards extreme rightwing ideology.

Is the life of ‘the spare’ really so bad?

The life of a back-up royal sounds pretty enviable

Three cheers for whoever came up with the title of Prince Harry’s new autobiography, Spare. It’s punchy — and it evokes a sense of sadness. Is this how Harry has always felt? Like a disposable spare part?

The “heir and the spare” describes the first in line to the throne and the “reserve” monarch. It may sound cruel — and perhaps it is — but as soon as hereditary systems were established, queens and kings recognized that to ensure continuity and stability for their monarchy, it was necessary to have a healthy male heir and one in reserve should the eldest one die — which they often did.

Spoiled and manipulated is not a good look Harry.

Inside a US military cyber team’s defence of Ukraine

In early December last year, a small US military team led by a young major arrived in Ukraine on a reconnaissance trip ahead of a larger deployment. But the major quickly reported that she needed to stay.

“Within a week we had the whole team there ready to go hunting,” one of the team recalls.

They had come to detect Russians online and their Ukrainian partners made it clear they needed to start work straight away.

I realize this is the military equivalent of flag football but the facade of non-intervention by the US and likely other NATO allies can no longer be maintained.

Killing the Leviathan with a Thousand Cuts

While political debate today is focused on the slow but steady disintegration of the so-called world order, the crises affecting the concept of statehood, the foundation of any world order, may not be receiving the attention it merits.

Ever since it appeared in its early and vague contours, statehood as a concept has been challenged by a range of factors — from paganism and its ritual to organized religion, ideology, despotic adventures, private financial power, and, more recently, globalization.

Statehood had to overcome tribalism and adopt the broader concept of “the people” as foundation bloc. It then had to ward off a challenge by organized religion and develop the concept of citizenship. What emerged was a world of nation-states that could coexist, albeit not always in peace, within a world order based on international law.

Olaf Scholz won’t dump China. Will Europe ever learn?

It was early fall, 1959. A senior official from Mao’s China was leading a mission to Kyiv, then part of the Soviet Union. He inspected factories, learned about state planning, and took an afternoon boat trip on the Dnipro River with his 30-plus comrades. It’s nothing like the Ukraine his son has to deal with today.

Xi Zhongxun, father of the current Chinese President Xi Jinping, led the visit. As secretary-general of the State Council, the government arm of the Communist Party, Xi the senior spent a total of four days in what is now Ukraine’s capital. The trip also took him to Moscow and Prague, and apparently left a mark on the boy who would one day run the only powerful Communist Party left standing on earth.

South Korea Halloween crush: ‘I was trapped on ledge, watching people die’

At least 153 people died when crowds thronged the Itaewon district of South Korea’s capital.

Car bombings kill at least 100 in Mogadishu, says Somali president

Somalia’s president says at least 100 people were killed on Saturday in two car bombings at a busy junction in the capital, Mogadishu, and the toll could rise in the country’s deadliest attack since a truck bombing at the same spot five years ago killed more than 500.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, at the site of the explosions in Mogadishu, told journalists that nearly 300 other people were wounded. “We ask our international partners and Muslims around the world to send their medical doctors here since we can’t send all the victims outside the country for treatment,” he said.

How can they tell when a bomb goes off? Does the place look better post detonation?

WaPo’s Bob Woodward Releases ‘Raw’ Audio of 20 Interviews He Says Prove Trump Is an ‘Unparalleled Da

In its simplest terms, Trump Derangement Syndrome is “a neurotic obsession with Donald Trump.”

Officially at least, TDS is not a real, diagnosable, or treatable mental disorder, but to deny its existence is to deny the reality of the last seven or more years. Not to intentionally set anyone’s hair on fire, but two types of TDS have existed since Trump formally announced his candidacy on June 16, 2015, with a campaign rally and speech at Trump Tower in New York City. From that moment, it’s been game-on ever since.

Europe’s Green Future Is Cold and Dark

Relying on clean energy sources such as wind and solar while ignoring energy security has proven to be disastrous for Europe

In the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, European Union (E.U.) nations are scrambling to source fossil fuels to run their factories and heat their homes this winter. They vigorously boycotted Russian natural gas and levied sanctions, you’ll recall, as a way of punishing Russia for its evil warring ways.
