Continental Breakfast (Open Thread)

Pumpkin omelet, Spanish style! “full of yummy healing spices!” At your own risk.

Pumpkins are so delicious! Extremely Easy! (Actually I quite like the look of these.)

Okay, we should move on from this pumpkin theme. Or at least expand upon it. Suggestions?

Crass, but funny. I must be slipping, I can’t come up with anything better than “Sussex it to me, Duchess! Yeah, Baby!“.

Why Is Putin’s Army Inept?

The old adage that cheaters never win is proving itself true once again.

Washington — Whatever happened to the Russian Army? For that matter, whatever happened to the Russian Air Force or the Russian Navy, whose flagship is now at the bottom of the Black Sea? The answer is nothing. Nothing has happened to the Russian military for 50 years, and President Vladimir Putin should have thought twice before heaving his armed forces into a war.

The latest Russian veto shows it’s time to give up on the UN

Ever since the signing of the United Nations Charter in San Francisco in 1945, its legal framework has been seen as offering a bulwark against expansionism and international aggression. The insistence in the Charter on sovereign equality, territorial integrity and non-interference in the internal affairs of member-states allowed ex-colonial states to enshrine their independence from their former masters. The UN also facilitated mobilisation to defend the independence of its member states. It was through the international body, for example, that the US organised an enormous coalition to reverse the Iraqi annexation of Kuwait in the 1990-1991 Gulf War.

The real reason straight people aren’t going to see Bros

Billy Eichner is repellant

Something happened in American society between the release of Bros last weekend and 2018, when Bohemian Rhapsody, the biopic of gay, HIV-positive Queen front man Freddie Mercury, grossed $900 million at the box office. Comedian Billy Eichner’s gay romcom barely eked out a pathetic $4.8 million on opening night, around the same amount that Ellen “Elliot” Page spent on flannel shirts and Groucho Marx glasses last year. Why the disparity in box office takings? Well, American moviegoers became deeply homophobic.

Who sabotaged Nord Stream?

Every suspect has the means, a motive and a desire to keep the truth hidden.

Both the old Nord Stream gas pipeline and its newer, never-opened counterpart, Nord Stream 2, were severely damaged last month, just off the Danish island of Bornholm. The incidents were almost immediately deemed an act of sabotage.

In the old days, someone – an international terrorist group, say – might have ‘claimed responsibility’ for such a daring and effective attack. This time, though, there have been only accusations, counter-accusations and denial. And all have been somehow less fierce and less definitive than might have been expected as a response to an attack on a major piece of international infrastructure.

Sabrina Maddeaux: Living in tool sheds won’t solve housing crisis

Great Depression Era “Hooverville” USA

Outside Cambridge city hall sits a small, 110-square-foot wooden shack meant to demonstrate how the city can house its rapidly increasing population. It contains no toilet and, while it is insulated, no heating system. The city doesn’t intend to use these shanties to charitably house the homeless, but promote them as solutions for paying tenants.

‘Demisexual’ Royal Navy engineer denies sexually assaulting male colleague

Demisexual groper

A Royal Navy engineer denied sexually assaulting a male colleague and told a court martial he couldn’t have done it as he was “demisexual”.

Able Seaman Triss Smythe told the hearing that he must be innocent as being demisexual meant he needed to form a strong emotional bond with anyone before he could even begin to think about sexual contact.

White House says ‘it’s clear’ Saudi-led OPEC is ‘aligning’ with Putin after it ignored Biden’s pleas and cut oil production by TWO MILLION barrels a day

The White House said on Wednesday that ‘it’s clear’ the OPEC+ oil alliance ‘is aligning with Russia’ after it announced a massive production cut of two million barrels.

It stands to be a big boost for Moscow, despite the West’s efforts to choke off oil and gas revenues as a source of cashflow to fund Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.

Meanwhile American drivers could face another increase in gas prices in what could end up being a massive setback for the Biden administration.

Great: Gas prices in Canada could rise further as OPEC+ sharply cuts oil production.

Both the US and Canada could be energy self-sufficient. Why are our elites cheating us of our birthright?

Nanos projections show Poilievre’s Conservatives winning more seats than Trudeau’s Liberals

If an election were to be held today, the Conservative Party would win more seats than the Liberals, the latest seat projections from Nanos Research show.

In the last two federal elections, the Conservatives edged out the Liberals on the popular vote but failed to win the most seats, allowing Justin Trudeau to form consecutive minority governments.

5 Years After Las Vegas Concert Shooting, an FBI Whistleblower Reveals Probable Motive

It has been five years since Stephen Paddock stashed an arsenal of weapons in his Las Vegas hotel room and began spraying outdoor concertgoers with more than a thousand rounds of rifle fire, killing 58 people and wounding 869. Since the Oct. 1, 2017, massacre, there’s been neither an official nor satisfactory explanation for why Paddock took his assorted rifles and shot those country music fans. But now, an FBI whistleblower believes he has the motive.

Criminal Neglect

Newly released numbers from the National Crime Victimization Survey confirm that violent crime in urban areas is rising dramatically.

Confirming widespread perceptions, the nation’s largest crime survey finds that violent crime in urban areas rose dramatically from 2020 to 2021. The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), the statistical arm of the Department of Justice, recently released findings from the 2021 National Crime Victimization Survey. According to the NCVS, which dates to the Nixon administration, the rate of violent crime rose only in urban areas. It did not change to a statistically significant degree in suburban or rural areas.

‘There will be more failures’: frustration as Cuba’s infrastructure crumbles

Countrywide blackout after Hurricane Ian was the latest disaster straining Cuba’s already disintegrating infrastructure

Yamile Sánchez leaned from her colonial-era window into the street in central Havana, a large pile of avocados visible behind her. “The damage used to be sorted out much faster,” she said. “Even when the storms were worse.”

The avocados, dusty green in contrast to Sanchez’s worn blue shutters, each had a bruise on one side. They had fallen during the passage of Hurricane Ian last week, as had Cuba’s entire electricity grid.

She was selling the windfall, avocados being the only thing cheap and available on the Caribbean island right now.

US midterms: The Trump voters who see a coming storm

Karen and Steve don’t want to take up arms. But if Republicans lose in November this elderly Arizona couple say a civil war is coming and, yes, they will fight. They have discussed it between them, and feel that taking up arms is their best option. It was at this point that our conversation grew a little dark and my faith in the strength of American democracy grew a little shaky.

I met the Slatons at their Trump paraphernalia store in Show Low, Arizona. It was one of the first stops on a month-long road trip that I took around America this summer, a journey to understand why the upcoming elections feel so consequential, perhaps even a little ominous.

Turkey’s ‘Weaponization’ of Illegal Mass Migration

The Republic of Cyprus, 36% of which is illegally occupied by Turkey, is increasingly struggling with a massive wave of illegal migration from Turkey, the Middle East and Africa.

Cyprus now has the highest number of asylum applications per capita of any EU country. Nearly 5% of the island population, according to the country’s officials, is now made up of asylum seekers.
