When Conservatives Lose the Plot

As a conservative profoundly involved in the “culture wars,” I have come to realize that the problem I have is not with liberals, Leftists, apostles of Woke, and other assorted ideologues and disreputables. I expect nothing from them but deceit, vulgarity, hate-spew, and ignorance, and so do not feel especially shocked by their behavior. The problem I have is with conservatives, too many of whom do not appear to fully honor conservative principles and values. They often seem to temporize with their antagonists, can act at times quite autocratically, and are occasionally distressingly superficial in their assessments of contemporary events. Human, all too human, of course; still, one might have thought better of those brave combatants in the political trenches.

WHO may declare monkeypox outbreak a global health emergency

The World Health Organisation says they will reconvene their monkeypox committee to decide on if it should be considered a ‘global health emergency’.

The UN health agency are now aware of 9,200 cases in 63 countries in the last update issued on Tuesday, with the UK recording 1,735 cases between May 6 and July 11 this year.

UK Health Security Agency figures show that the majority were Londoners, with 1,229 reported in the capital.

‘Politics is the cancer on government’ — and Conservative leadership candidate Roman Baber says he has the cure

OTTAWA—Pierre Poilievre may be the front-runner in the Conservative party’s leadership race. But when it comes to one of the main themes of this contest, there’s another contender who has walked ahead of him — and in one case, literally.

In mid-June, former Ontario MPP Roman Baber walked for 15 kilometres on the shoulder of an Ontario highway alongside James Topp, a leading figure of the anti-vaccination-mandate movement.

Topp’s cross-Canada march was set to culminate in Ottawa for Canada Day, amid fears his supporters would seek to occupy the capital in a manner similar to the so-called “Freedom Convoy” earlier this year.

The Liberals are facing heavy criticism from Ukraine for exempting six Siemens Energy turbines, which were serviced in Montreal and help deliver gas to parts of Germany, from sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking to reporters in a teleconference after a meeting of G-20 finance ministers in Bali, Indonesia, Freeland said she understood Ukraine’s response but defended the government’s move as the right one to make under the circumstances.

“That was a very difficult decision for Canada and I understand the concern that Ukraine has about it, but it was the right thing to do,” Freeland said.

Toronto continues to ignore the disastrous effects of its hotel shelter policy

The city of Toronto’s controversial plan to dump the homeless in three-star hotels during Covid was supposed to be a temporary measure only.

It was sold to Torontonians as a way of socially distancing the homeless during the pandemic and of providing those who were squatting in downtown parks a roof over their heads. But now more than two years later, the homeless hotels are still operating, many with a phalanx of security guards 24/7 to try to keep the residents from wreaking havoc on the surrounding neighbourhood.

She’s more low-key than her boss. A squeaky voice and pedantic manner make her less suspect. None of it should undermine the idea that Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland is playing second-fiddle to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The parameters accorded to establishment media by Canada’s Liberal government recede at a rapid pace. It was in February, 2021 that the National Post offered the following political observation:

“There’s no need to invent conspiracy theories. The attempt by global elites to subvert local democracy is in plain view.”
