Afghan evacuees just walking away from military bases in U.S.

WASHINGTON, Oct 1 (Reuters) – Something unexpected is happening at U.S. military bases hosting Afghan evacuees: Many hundreds of them are simply leaving before receiving U.S. resettlement services, two sources familiar with the data told Reuters.

The number of “independent departures,” which top 700 and could be higher, has not been previously reported. But the phenomenon is raising alarms among immigration advocates concerned about the risks to Afghans who give up on what is now an open-ended, complex and completely voluntary resettlement process.

“Canadian” ISIS member caught in Syria flown to U.S. to face terrorism charges

A Canadian who was allegedly “a leading figure” in the ISIS media section has been taken to the United States to face terrorism charges, the U.S. Justice Department said Saturday.

The FBI took custody of Mohamed Khalifa from Kurdish forces in northeast Syria, where he was captured in January 2019, and flew him to the eastern U.S. to stand trial.

No worries, Justin will win his freedom and give him a big fat cheque.

Trump asks federal judge to restore Twitter account

Former President Trump has asked a federal judge in Florida to force Twitter to restore his account, arguing the company improperly suspended him after receiving pressure from members of Congress.

Twitter “exercises a degree of power and control over political discourse in this country that is immeasurable, historically unprecedented, and profoundly dangerous to open democratic debate,” the Friday filing read, Bloomberg reported.

Crappy Olympics weightlifter Laurel Hubbard is named sportswoman of the year in New Zealand

New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard has been named sportswoman of the year by the University of Otago.

She was awarded this title by the university based in Dunedin on the South Island of New Zealand at the Blues awards on Tuesday.

She is the first transgender winner of the award in its 113 year history celebrating sporting greatness.

Lockheed Martin’s notoriously-secretive Skunk Works boss won’t comment on a video that shows an enormous, saucer-like object parked at a Lockheed testing facility.

A video posted on Twitter showed the sleek and aerodynamic object being pulled on the back of a flatbed trailer in the Mohave Desert.

It was likely spotted in Lockheed’s Helendale Radar Cross Section Facility, said Twitter user Ruben Hofs, who analyzed the video.

Toronto city council has just approved a five-year plan to deal with food insecurity in the Black community in a culturally sensitive way.

The plan, approved Friday, is the first of its sort in North America and lays out a multi-million dollar commitment to advance food sovereignty in Black communities over the next five years.

Melana Roberts, a policy development officer with the city’s Confronting Anti-Black Racism unit (CABR) who worked on the plan, said the team did not come across anything similar globally — a Black-led food plan funded municipally.

“We can’t just have a charitable approach to this,” Roberts tells the Star. “We need a human-rights-based approach that’s based in not only addressing the challenges Black communities face, but positioning them as leaders.”

It can’t just be charitable that would be racist.
