If one in three people are exempt from quarantine, this is a major loophole in what Trudeau has claimed is a credible response to the danger of new infections and new variants of COVID-19 entering and then spreading within Canada. Another loophole that is being exploited to avoid hotel quarantine is to fly into the United States and then cross the land border. Remarkably no hotel quarantine is mandated when you arrive by land rather than by air, since for some reason federal authorities seem to believe that the virus is less transmissible if it crosses into Canada by road.

Greyhound Canada is closing down all bus routes in Ontario and Quebec, effective Thursday.
The transporation company said in a news release that due to low ridership, it will discontinue all routes in both provinces.

The legislation, first introduced on Feb. 18, “would require a retail department store with 500 or more employees that sells childcare items, children’s clothing, or toys, to maintain a gender neutral section or area … in which a reasonable selection of the items, articles, and toys for children that it sells shall be displayed, regardless of whether they have been traditionally marketed for either girls or for boys,” according to a bill summary.

Simmering internal discontent within Alberta Premier Jason Kenney’s United Conservative Party caucus has boiled over into an open challenge to his leadership.
Senior backbench member Todd Loewen, in a letter posted on Facebook early Thursday, called on Kenney to resign, saying he no longer has confidence in his leadership.

Two tree stumps signaled to Larry Pynn that something was wrong.
Jutting from a mossy forest floor in western Canada, the fresh stumps were the final remnants of two western red cedars that had been chopped down by chainsaw. Nearby, a set of deep tire tracks ran for nearly a kilometer in the mud before terminating at the main road.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has called for a “new vision” for the military even if no one, including him, can explain what it is. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has been consistent in his criticism of the Trudeau government for being lax at international borders, a federal jurisdiction. In a May 12 tweet, Ford shared a National Post story, which reports that almost a third of international air travellers are exempted from the three day “mandatory” hotel quarantine. Federal authorities did not provide a breakdown of the reasons for the exemptions, although in general they apply to essential workers, diplomats, and others whose need to cross borders is deemed essential by the federal government, in addition to exemptions made on humanitarian grounds.
