The twilight of the Anglosphere

The English-speaking world has turned its back on meritocracy, liberty and economic progress.

The pomp and ceremony of this weekend’s coronation of King Charles III could not hide the fact that Britain, once the most powerful nation on Earth, has become slightly dysfunctional and even a bit weird. In fact, this dysfunction is not just afflicting the United Kingdom itself, but also the broader Anglosphere, right from the antipodes up to the snowy wastes of Canada.

Sam Bankman-Fried, in First Detailed Defense, Seeks to Dismiss Charges

Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of the collapsed cryptocurrency exchange FTX, has issued his first detailed legal defense since prosecutors accused him of fraud, seeking to dismiss several of the charges and claiming that the high-powered law firm representing FTX in its bankruptcy has been doing the government’s bidding.

In court filings late Monday, lawyers for Mr. Bankman-Fried said FTX and its lawyers at the firm Sullivan & Cromwell had become de facto agents of federal prosecutors building the criminal case against him and might be withholding crucial evidence.

“FTX’s legal advisors went to the government to accuse Mr. Bankman-Fried behind his back without knowing the full facts, and ultimately forced him to step down as C.E.O.,” the lawyers wrote.

This sounds like the “If we had more time we coulda covered it up” defense.

What Do the CRTC’s Public Consultations on Banning Fox News Entail?

The fact that Canada’s broadcast regulator is holding public consultations on whether to ban Fox News, after receiving a complaint from an LGBTQ rights advocacy organization, is highly unusual, given that only one channel has been removed in recent years from the list of approved foreign broadcasters on Canadian cable television.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) removed Russia Today (RT) from Canadian cable packages in early 2022 shortly after the government issued an order-in-council asking the regulator to do so following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Joly announces Canada’s bid for a seat on the UN Human Rights Council

United Nations UN Beaver

Canada is throwing its hat in the ring for a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council, pledging to advance issues from online speech to access to abortion.

Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly on Tuesday announced Canada’s candidacy to sit on the council for 2028 to 2030, through an election that will likely take place in 2026.

This is bullshit. The real purpose is to land some contacts for a post politics gig.

Canada shouldn’t deny assisted suicide if social conditions made life intolerable: bioethicists

The cases have drawn international criticism: People in Canada with non-terminal conditions choosing a doctor-assisted death after a fruitless search for better housing or proper medical care.

But a new paper by two University of Toronto bioethicists argues that, while the decisions may be “deeply tragic,” it would be wrong to deny medical assistance in dying (MAID) to people whose request is being driven most of all by poverty or other unjust conditions — “people who not only might, but have explicitly said” they would prefer not to die.

Monsters.

Wide Majorities of Americans See Their Nation in Decline

A new set of polls shows American citizens gazing toward the future with pessimism about everything from the economy and politics to wealth and their standing in the world.

Released by Pew Research Center, the polling asked more than 5,000 American adults about their opinion of the country and what they forecast for the next 25 years. Large margins see a weaker economy, a diminished nation, and political tribalism only becoming more entrenched.

I am certain the same could be found in Canada.

Politicising death: the US obsession with race politics

The death of Jordan Neely, a 30-year-old homeless man, is being spun as the next George Floyd.

Neely died after he was allegedly put into a choke hold by an ex-US Marine assisted by at least two others in the New York Subway, following Neely apparently displaying unpredictable and threatening behaviour towards passengers.

According to witnesses, Neely was erratic and violent, shouting on the F-train, ‘I’ll hurt anyone on this train!’ and expressing that he was ‘ready to die’. He is also said to have thrown garbage at passengers.

Turkey’s Hizbullah Terrorists: Erdoğan’s New Ally

Turkey’s Hizbullah is not to be confused with the Lebanese Shia terror group Hezbollah, although their name has the same meaning in Arabic: The Party of God. Turkey’s Hizbullah is radically Sunni and pro-Kurdish.

At the peak of its violent campaign between 1991 and 2001, Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate announced that the organization’s ideology was “to fight every non-Islamic regime and administration in lands where Islam is not predominant.” In those years, Hizbullah had nearly 100 associations and NGOs under its auspices.

Canada’s worst decade for real economic growth since the 1930s

Over the last ten years real GDP per capita grew just 0.8 per cent a year on average in this country, its lowest rate of growth since the 1930s. Total GDP has been growing because of our growing population. But GDP per person has been essentially stagnant. This extended period of slow growth has widened the gap between per capita growth in the United States and Canada, demonstrating that the causes of our slumping growth are domestic, not external.
