German climate protesters glue themselves to Berlin streets

Let them become one with the environment.

Activists protesting at what they see as too sluggish government action to combat climate change glued themselves to streets all over the German capital, Berlin, on Monday, causing severe traffic disruption.

The group behind the protests, Last Generation, is calling on the German government to take more drastic measures to cut greenhouse emissions, including stopping the use of all fossil fuels by 2030 and imposing an overall speed limit on highways.

Ottawa evacuates embassy staff from Sudan, but thousands of Canadians remain stranded

A small handful of Canadian embassy staff have been evacuated from war-ravaged Khartoum as part of a dramatic airlift of international diplomats by helicopter, airplane and ship, but more than 1,590 Canadians remain trapped in the country as the heavy fighting persists.

“Our diplomats are safe – they have been extracted and are working from outside the country – and we are looking at every possible option to support our locally engaged staff,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a tweet on Sunday.

We’ve seen this before.

Canadians of convenience who acquired passports the last time their beloved “homeland” imploded go right back when things have settled down and now demand rescue from their once again incendiary 3rd world shithole. They took on the risk of their own volition, we should not be held responsible for their decisions.

EVs Fall Short of EPA Estimates by a Much Larger Margin Than Gas Cars in Our Real-World Highway Testing

My bet says Justin’s roll of the EV dice turns up snake eyes.

A new paper published by SAE International uses Car and Driver‘s real-world highway test data to show that electric vehicles underperform on real-world efficiency and range relative to the EPA figures by a much greater margin than internal-combustion vehicles. While the latter typically meet or exceed the EPA-estimated highway fuel economy numbers, EVs tend to fall considerably short of the range number on the window sticker. The paper, written by Car and Driver’s testing director, Dave VanderWerp, and Gregory Pannone, was presented this week at SAE International’s annual WCX conference. It points to a need for revised testing and labeling standards for EVs moving forward.

Canada’s National Defence in Peril With Inadequate Spending: Former Defence Ministers

An open letter, signed by former defence ministers among more than 60 former senior public servants and military and security officials, has been issued by the Conference of Defence Associations Institute (CDAI), warning that Canada is failing to live up to international expectations for military spending.

The April 16 letter came just days before an April 19 Washington Post report that alleged Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) officials privately that the country will never meet the spending target agreed to by the alliance’s member countries.

Tarek Fatah dead at 73

Tarek Fatah was courageous in his defence of human rights

Fearless. That’s the one word that, for me, best described Tarek Fatah.

As one of the editors of the immensely popular political columns he wrote for the Toronto Sun starting in 2012, I always marvelled at his fearlessness.

Sad news. I met him on a couple of occasions at events around town, fun to chat with, not everyone’s cup of tea I know but always interesting.

UK: Diane Abbot Labour Whip Suspended For Declaring Jews Only Suffered Prejudice On Par With Red Haired People

Diane Abbott has Labour whip suspended over Jewish racism claims

Diane Abbott has had the Labour whip suspended for writing to a newspaper to claim that Jewish people could not suffer from racism.

The former shadow home secretary has been forced to issue an apology and acknowledge that Jews have experienced the “monstrous” effects of racism after claiming that they had only experienced prejudice similar to discrimination against people with red hair.

Public service strike: Fortier insists negotiations continue despite ‘kicking and screaming’ over the weekend

Treasury Board President Mona Fortier insists negotiations between the federal government and the country’s largest public service union are ongoing this weekend, despite what she refers to as “ups and downs” and “kicking and screaming” over the past couple days.

“We’ve been in mediation for three weeks, we’ve been at the table for three weeks,” Fortier told CTV’s Question Period host Vassy Kapelos in an interview airing Sunday. “There have been ups and downs, there has been kicking and screaming, but the important thing right now is that we are focused, and we have a deal that is good for public servants, a fair one, and that is reasonable for Canadians, and that’s what we’re trying to focus on right now.”

They should stay out a very long time and demonstrate how little needed they are.

Former Anheuser-Busch exec says firm is ‘wrong’ to think cross-dresser controversy will go away

A former Anheuser-Busch (AB) executive says the firm is ‘wrong’ to think that the controversy surrounding Dylan Mulvaney’s paid partnership with Bud Light will go away because conservative customers won’t forget the fiasco.

Anson Frericks claimed that counting on people to forget about the incident which sparked widespread fury on April 1 is the ‘wrong bet to make’.

He appeared on Fox & Friends Weekend on Fox News Sunday to discuss reports that Bud Light’s marketing vice president Alissa Heinerscheid has taken a leave of absence following the incident.

Canadians skeptical of King Charles’ engagement with public after first months on throne

MONTREAL — King Charles III’s first months on the throne have shown he’s a monarch who will take an active role in different causes and is ready to engage with the public, royal experts say, but he still has work to do to win over a skeptical Canadian public.

His Mom was a tough act to follow. But Charles is eco-woke that won’t win hearts and minds.

Chinese scientists publish error-strewn Covid paper in top scientific journal

Ever since the world was forced into lockdown in March 2020, the question of where and how Covid-19 appeared has captivated scientists and the wider public.

Tracing the source of the virus could be invaluable in preventing future pandemics, yet the quest to find Covid’s origins has been deeply politicized, which in turn has altered the course of research, collaboration and dialogue. Sadly, as a recent publication by Chinese scientists in Nature shows, we are still a long way from getting to the bottom of what happened in Wuhan in 2020.

The mob, fear and the new totalitarianism

THE recent violent attacks on Kellie-Jay Keen and Riley Gaines for speaking up for sex-based rights including single sex spaces and female only sports have been met with horror and incomprehension across social media and wider society. However, on closer examination these activists and their violent actions are understandable if viewed in the context of the mob, as envisaged by Hannah Arendt, the most famous political thinker of the 20th century. What we are witnessing is the use of the mob by the ruling class to bring about a totalitarian regime and usher in an era of digital feudalism where the masses are exploited by a rich and powerful class and stripped of all agency and wealth.

The Death of BuzzFeed News Was a Facebook Murder-Suicide

Online media companies got exactly what they said they wanted.

BuzzFeed News is closing up shop. Web visitors can still find all the quizzes and listicles they have come to love—those exist on the nonnews side of BuzzFeed—but the journalism division is shuttering.

The death of BuzzFeed News marks the definitive endpoint of a certain form of social media–driven, millennial-centric journalism; as such, it is being eulogized by many former contributors, including Charlie Warzel, who correctly observes that “The Internet of the 2010s Ended Today.” Ben Smith, the former editor in chief of BuzzFeed News who infamously published the Steele dossier—a substantially discredited intelligence document that sought to tie former President Donald Trump to Russian President Vladimir Putin—and current Semafor editor in chief lays the blame at the feet of social media. BuzzFeed News‘ doom was at hand, he writes, “when consumers found their Facebook feeds toxic, not delightful; when platforms decided news was poison; and when Facebook, Twitter, and the rest simply stopped distributing links to websites.”

So Meghan Markle wrote to King Charles, telling him all about his racism and ‘unconscious bias’?

How’d you like to get a letter from a newly married-in family member, telling you all about your ‘racism’ and ‘unconscious bias’?

It’s disgusting, not only to hear it from a not-so-black person who claims to be an expert on blackness, but because such racism probably doesn’t exist, and worst of all, amounts to a sort of mind-reading about intentions that the person on the receiving end knows nothing about, so good luck defending himself. Given that the royal family allowed Markle, a commoner no less, into the royal family circle, and handed her a fancy ‘duchess’ title, it doesn’t sound like a lot of racism to normal people.
