The working classes are a volcano waiting to erupt

Workers across the world are being squeezed from all sides. They won’t put up with it forever.

Whatever the final outcome, the recent French elections have already revealed the comparative irrelevance of many elite concerns, from genderfluidity and racial injustice to the ever-present ‘climate catastrophe’. Instead, most voters in France and elsewhere are more concerned about soaring energy, food and housing costs. Many suspect that the cognitive elites, epitomised by President Emmanuel Macron, lack even the ambition to improve their living conditions.

Trickle-Down Racist Antiracism

This reactionary and neo-Confederate return to racial stigmatization and hatred is not going to end well.

Elected governments were rare in the past. They did not appear until over four millennia after civilization first emerged in the Near East. Constitutional systems were fragile at birth. And they are on the wane today. Nation after nation seems to be devolving into autocracy. Multiethnic, multiracial consensual governments have been even more brittle and sporadic in history.

German police probe displays of support for Russian invasion of Ukraine

Police in several states across Germany have opened investigations into public displays of support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the RND newspaper group reported on Monday.

More than 140 investigations have been launched, most looking into the use of the “Z” symbol that has been seen in several protests in Germany alongside Russian flags.

The symbol has been associated with Russia’s invasion after many of the vehicles that Russian forces drove into Ukraine had the letter painted on their side.

Musk Makes the Mask Slip

The Tesla CEO’s bid to buy Twitter has prompted many prominent figures to admit bluntly that they oppose free speech.

Though he has just offered to buy Twitter for around $40 billion, it’s far from clear that Elon Musk knows how to run a social media platform. Speaking about his bid at an event last week, Musk mused that people should be “able to speak freely within the bounds of the law.” But a social media product that came to be dominated by anti-Semitism, porn, coordinated abuse, virulent racial animus, and bot-generated foreign propaganda—all forms of speech “within the bounds of the law”—would soon have little value. During the same interview, Musk announced that his “top priority” is to eliminate spam—perfectly lawful communication. Musk does not seem to have thought this through yet.

Ryan Alford: The charter pits Canadians’ civil liberties against social justice overreach

After 40 years, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms has become a firm fixture of Canada’s constitutional architecture. More importantly, it has been embraced by Canadians across the political spectrum and has become one of the most popular emblems of our polity. Due to the prestige and importance of an instrument that has increasingly come to represent our national identity, it is not surprising that is has become a battleground, contested by those who hold fast to the idea that a constitution serves to limit the powers of government, and those who see it as a means of empowering the government to achieve their vision of a just society. Before the charter turns 50, Canada will have chosen between these two incompatible visions of our constitutional order.

Zelenskiy: Ukraine could become EU candidate within weeks

April 18 (Reuters) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy formally submitted a completed questionnaire on European Union membership to an envoy on Monday and said he believed this step would lead to his country gaining candidate status within weeks.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen handed the questionnaire to Zelenskiy during a visit to Kyiv on April 8, pledging a speedier start to Ukraine’s bid to become a member of the EU following Russia’s invasion of the country.

Join the EU? Madness at the best of times, they’re more totalitarian than Russia. Certainly more communist.

The EU probably hopes Ukraine goes quietly & quickly into that good night before they have to actually cut off Russian gas supplies.

Beaming Earth’s location into space could cause an alien invasion

A message broadcast out to space revealing Earth’s location could provoke an invasion from aliens, an expert has warned.

NASA launched a basic one called Arecibo in 1974 but with better tech available today scientists want to update it.

The new spacebound note – dubbed the Beacon in the Galaxy – is the latest attempt to make contact with other lifeforms.

I dunno, this makes Earth seem desperate.
