How Putin Misunderstood Rumsfeld

Apart from its political impact on the international order, the war that Russia has launched against Ukraine contains countless features that should interest military analysts and planners across the globe.

This is the first time since World War II that the Russian Army (formerly Soviet Red Army) is tested on the battlefield against a medium-sized adversary in a classical war.

In the 1950s, the Red Army fought border wars with Communist China and managed to annex large chunks of territory across the border. But that was not a full-scale war, as a much weaker China, then also devoid of nuclear weapons, shied away from fighting back in a meaningful way.

Where would we be without Islamic scholars?

Islamic Scholar: Israel Instigated The War In Order To Empty Out Ukraine And Move In

Palestinian Islamic scholar Mraweh Nassar, the Secretary-General of the Jerusalem Committee of the International Union of Muslims Scholars, said in a March 22, 2022 interview on the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated Arabic-language Channel 9 (Turkey) that the war in Ukraine was instigated by the Jews in order to establish a Jewish state there to replace Israel. He explained that the Jews have been forsaken by America and the West, who have come to realize that the Zionist project is a failure that will come to an end within two years. He elaborated that the Israelis have thus realigned with Russia and China.

Glad that’s cleared up.

FUREY: The Trudeau Liberals remain obsessed with censoring Internet

One year ago there was a lot of noise about the federal Liberal government looking for ways to regulate Internet content and effectively give themselves the power to censor people’s social media posts.

What was then known as Bill C-10 was seen as a backdoor way to bring in creeping censorship by giving the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) the powers to regular what they termed user-generated content posted online, in the same way the regulatory body currently has domain over the radio and TV realm.

His comments came after Disney employees staged a walk-out in protest of the company’s response to the new Florida law.

Friendly fire blunders, confusion, low morale: why Russia’s army has stalled

Uniforms are one of the most deceptive trappings of military culture. They suggest uniformity but it is often said of the British army that if two officers look the same, one must be improperly dressed. Armies, and especially professional armies, are more often warring tribes of subcultures, and for commanders it is critical to understand how those cultures interact if the force is to be employed effectively in battle.

When it comes to Russian military culture, the Russian army has been through a period of significant change, with constant modernisation since 2008. The Soviet Union fielded an army of more than 3.5 million soldiers in 1991. The Soviet army was largely a conscript force and lacked an experienced noncommissioned officer corps. This meant that Soviet units had to be treated with a degree of uniformity, since the personnel rotated so frequently that most line units were necessarily commanded using set formulas that formed the basis for unit training.

Biden ‘confident’ his son didn’t break the law, White House chief of staff says

President Joe Biden is “confident” that his son Hunter didn’t break the law, White House chief of staff Ron Klain said Sunday.

“Of course the president is confident that his son didn’t break the law,” Klain said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Hunter Biden’s international business dealings have been under investigation since 2020, but discussion about his conduct has accelerated in recent weeks with confirmation that a laptop dropped off at a repair shop in Delaware was indeed his. Among the questions is whether he exploited his family name to make dubious or illegal business deals, and whether his father was aware of what he is/was doing.

That Liberal-NDP deal may be putting New Democrats in an awkward spot

A cynic might wonder whether New Democrats are feeling uneasy about their public image

On Wednesday, a little more than a week after the Liberals and New Democrats announced a historic confidence-and-supply agreement, NDP MP Laurel Collins rose in the House of Commons and attacked the government’s new climate plan, saying it lacks “ambition” and offers “massive subsidies to unproven carbon capture technology.”

“The government continues to put the interests of big oil and gas above protecting the workers who are impacted by the climate crisis,” she said.

Maybe Collins would have been even less generous if the Liberal-NDP accord didn’t exist. But her critical read of the Liberal plan might dash any thoughts that the new governing agreement means Liberals and New Democrats will spend the next three years holding hands and singing the old CCF campaign song.

The NDP’s public image wasn’t always complete shiite but they’re Singhing a different tune now.
