The transgender and gay-rights movements are often lumped together — including in the very acronym LGBT — so many observers assume that the transgender cause will follow a similar trajectory. But there’s a reason why transgender activists won’t experience the level of rapid success that gay-rights activists enjoyed over the past several decades.

In less enlightened ages than our own, this sort of thing was taken for granted: boys should compete in boys’ sporting events and girls in those set aside for girls. No one thought about boys playing girls’ sports at all, because no boy would have even wanted to do so, but everyone knew that a boy of only average ability would dominate girls’ sports, because of natural physical differences. All this has not exactly been forgotten nowadays; even worse, it has been denounced as “transphobic bigotry.” Everyone today is smarter and wiser than our forbears. We know girls are boys and boys are girls, and boys pretending to be girls and setting women’s sporting records are to be celebrated. Except, that is, in Iowa.

I was wondering where Sports Illustrated was when it came to Will Thomas, the lousy male swimmer at the University of Pennsylvania who now competes as a woman and blows away in the competition. (Note: High school boys routinely beat professional female athletes.) It turns out that S.I.’s Robert Sanchez was slaving over a puff piece allowing Will to tell “her story.” Will is an uninteresting, immature man suffering from body dysmorphia. What’s more interesting is S.I.’s relentless propaganda push.

Do surgeons obtain truly informed consents for life-altering procedures on minors?

Beverly* from Oregon emails me: “Urgent need help with ROGD daughter please answer ASAP.” Her daughter announced out of the blue that she’s a boy (this is called Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria, or ROGD). I’m a child and adolescent psychiatrist, and I receive messages like this almost daily. That’s because unlike most of my colleagues, I won’t automatically affirm a child’s new identity, or refer her to a clinic where she’ll be put on experimental hormone therapy.

Orwell tropes are overused. I’m guilty of it myself. And yet there are times when only a Nineteen Eighty-Four reference will do. The police questioning of Scottish charity worker Nicola Murray is one of those times. After Ms Murray issued a statement saying that her domestic-violence charity would no longer refer women to the Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre, because of ‘deeply concerning comments’ made by the trans woman who runs the centre, the police came knocking. ‘We need to speak to you to ascertain what your thinking was behind making your statement’, they told Murray. Police officers visiting a woman’s home and grilling her over her ‘thinking’?

Yep, we need Orwell for this.
