In Canada, Too, the Case for School Choice Is Strong

Wherever you look, the demand for more choice and the evidence of its benefits are abundant.

The school-choice boom that began in the U.S. during the Covid-19 pandemic has carried on in 2023, with states across the country implementing or expanding programs that give families better access to private educational alternatives. In Canada, unfortunately, the story is quite different; there’s been no such progress for school choice.

Jesse Kline: Educators shocked Doug Ford wants students to learn to read and do math

The Ontario government’s new bill to give the province more control over school boards, in order to get back to focusing on reading, writing and arithmetic, is welcome news for parents who are concerned that schools are increasingly focused on indoctrination rather than education. The fact that the left-wing media and those involved in the education system are so perplexed about why reform is necessary highlights how out of touch they really are.

Taking over the boards is a good start but unless they are prepared to shut down the insane teacher’s colleges like OISE and bust the union there is no hope for public education.

Why are Americans getting dumber?

IQ scores are nosediving after a long increase

New research from the United States confirms a worrying trend — a long-term decline in IQ scores. In cruder terms, Americans are getting dumber every year.

According to a report in Popular Mechanics, researchers from Northwestern University used “survey responses from 394,378 Americans between 2006 to 2018 to examine if cognitive ability scores changed within the US in those 13 years”. What they found was a general, though not uniform, drop-off in measured ability.

Oklahoma education secretary: Teachers injecting ‘sick material’ in schools should be kicked out of profession

The Oklahoma education secretary said public school teachers indoctrinating kids with woke ideology have ‘no place’ in the profession

Oklahoma’s education secretary Ryan Walters told Fox News Digital about a potential plan to revoke teaching certificates in cases where educators are found pushing “sick material” in public school classrooms.

“Ultimately, if you’re trying to push ideology on our kids, there’s no place for you to be a teacher,” Walters told Fox News Digital. “Being a teacher is about focusing on academics and equipping students with the skills so that they can be successful in life, not indoctrinating them to a woke ideology.”

He’s right but a complete “cleansing” of teacher colleges and unions will have to be a part of the solution.

Public education is as bad as, if not worse than, you’ve heard

At Wesley Yang’s Year Zero substack site, a left-leaning public teacher in a leftist school district published an article describing just how crazy things really are in such schools.  While your children may be behind in reading, writing, and arithmetic, it’s clear they’re getting an extra-large dose of hard-left racism (and probably gender theory and America-hatred, although the essay doesn’t touch on those things).  If you have children or grandchildren in public schools, or you simply care about America’s future, you should read that essay and then pay close attention to your next school board election.

The essay, entitled “Yes, Things Are Really as Bad as You’ve Heard,” sounds like one of the more outlandish Babylon Bee parodies.

Randi Weingarten’s Teachers Union Commissioned a Poll on Education. She Won’t Like the Results.

One of the clearest villains of the pandemic was Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, a powerful and deep-pocketed union. Her tireless anti-child and anti-science efforts played a major role in condemning millions of American students to disastrous “virtual learning,” for a year or more in many parts of the country. The bluer the area, the more influence unions wield over elected Democrats — and the likelier kids in those jurisdictions were languish at home, denied crucial in-person instruction. And when they were finally permitted back into classrooms, after well over a year in many cases, the likelier they were to face unsupported-by-data mask mandates.

Here’s the evidence of Critical Race Theory lessons in schools

Mary Nicely, who is now second-in-command at the California Department of Education, went on her personal Facebook page this summer to denounce conservatives who oppose teaching critical race theory in schools as “yet another White right and education reformer distraction.”

Nicely also reposted a newspaper column in July defining critical race theory as a key used in law schools to expose racism in the legal system: “It is taught, if at all, in law school — not high school.”

Her claim echoed other education experts, like Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, who tweeted: “We could explain until our last breath that CRT is not taught in K-12, but the actual definition of CRT doesn’t matter anymore in these debates.”

These denials, which have been amplified by many news organizations, are at odds with overwhelming evidence – documented by class lessons, school curricula, focus groups, teacher surveys and public statements by educators – that CRT is not only taught in class, but is also heavily promoted by the K-12 education establishment.

How Radical Are the Teachers’ Unions?

America’s teachers’ unions are the country’s single most malign influence. They do more to promote leftist extremism, and do it more effectively, than anyone else. The teachers’ unions dominate the schools of education, from which most teachers come, and they control school board elections in most districts. In effect, they run the public schools, which is the main reason why the public schools are so bad.

How radical are they?

Science Betrayed: The propaganda infecting K–12 science curricula, especially on the environment, won’t go away.

Science Betrayed: The propaganda infecting K–12 science curricula, especially on the environment, won’t go away.

It is a sad irony that the teaching of science in American schools is so unscientific. In a more rational world, children would learn about nature and a mode of inquiry—the scientific method—that would awaken them to the awe, fascination, and surprise that the universe should inspire. Instead, the chronic problems afflicting K–12 education and the growing politicization of science have pushed us ever further from that ideal.

Glenn Reynolds is correct: Public education is child abuse

Chicago, which has America’s third largest school district, has long been known for its exceptionally aggressive public teachers’ union that seems wedded to strikes. What it doesn’t seem to be wedded to is teaching. That’s especially true with the Wuhan virus.

Chicago teachers are refusing to return to classrooms, despite the educational and emotional disaster that long-distance learning is proving to be for kids. Instead, six dance teachers offered an interpretative dance explaining why they prefer to stay home and get paid for short hours and minimally effective job performance.

I ran this last night but it’s running again. What the hell is this?

Alex Keaton did it better.
