How Woke Put Paid to Publishing

Until the industry reclaims its allegiance to free speech over ideological orthodoxies, both readers and writers will suffer.

News that Salman Rushdie had been stabbed on stage at a New York literary festival shocked the world. It prompted an outpouring of sympathy for the author, who has spent more than 30 years with a fatwa placed on his life. Amid concern for Rushdie’s health, some have begun to ask whether The Satanic Verses, his 1988 novel accused of blasphemy against Islam, could even be published today.

Universities drop Chaucer and Shakespeare as ‘decolonisation’ takes root

This is for their own good, according to the many British universities, which have sought to “decolonise the curriculum” and liberate courses from the inequities of “white, Western and Eurocentric” knowledge.

The syllogism seemingly accepted across many university departments runs like this: Western knowledge is a product of colonialism; colonialism is an evil to be opposed; therefore Western knowledge must be opposed.

In this view, it is incumbent upon academics to change curricula – megalithic “knowledge” is to be replaced by pluralistic “knowledges”, and the “Euro-centric” canon is to be replaced by one that is more diverse.

Edmonton opts not to install sculptures fearing they could be ‘misinterpreted’

A pair of statues that have sat in storage for years will not be installed, with the city expressing concern that they could be misinterpreted “as a celebration of colonization.”

The Buffalo and the Buffalo Fur Trader — which features two large bronze sculptures — was commissioned in 2012 by the City of Edmonton and Edmonton Arts Council at a cost of $375,000. The piece was completed six years ago.

Canadian Screen Awards switching to gender-neutral performance categories

The Canadian Screen Awards are moving to gender-neutral performance categories next year.

Instead of separate prizes for best actor and actress, there will now be a single recipient in each category.

On the film side, there will be awards for performance in a leading role and performance in a supporting role. For television, there will be awards for both lead and supporting performances in the drama and comedy categories, and an award for best performance in a TV movie.

Thus cutting the number of awards roughly in half, effectively punishing acting-persons for the woke agenda.

Pronouns caused Agriculture Canada systems to crash

A federal department’s decision to add gendered pronoun identifiers to its internal communications and remote work software caused the systems to crash and display errors.

On July 18, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) decided to introduce pronouns to Microsoft (MS) Teams and Outlook “to further (their) commitment to diversity and inclusion.” The use of pronouns such as “they/them” is a common practice among the LGBTQ+ community.

Do diversity targets matter more than defence?

Battle of Britain: White people doing heroic things is offensive and racist.

Even the RAF is in thrall to the cult of diversity.

A little while ago, I rewatched the 1969 film Battle of Britain. The shots of aerial combat have held up remarkably well. The casting not so much. Sure, Laurence Olivier, Michael Caine and Christopher Plummer have name recognition. You might even argue that they have some merit as actors. But they are woefully lacking in diversity. And as today’s Royal Air Force (RAF) is apparently keen to make known, this is now the key metric by which Britain’s defensive forces should be judged.

Wokeness Is Ripping Through America’s Schools. Here’s How To Protect Your Children From It

It’s back to school! You bought all the school supplies and new clothes, but what about insulating your children against school indoctrination? Sadly, indoctrination resistance is now part of going back to school so you must stay vigilant and teach your children personal boundaries.

Lesson plans about “social identity,” which may be called Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), Critical Race Theory, cultural competency, or other names, obliterate the personal boundaries of children in order to break down kids emotionally and build them back up as social justice activists. The process involves forging emotional bonds to influence children to become political proteges of the teachers and peers that emotionally manipulated them.

Adopting leftists’ mindsets and behaviors becomes an act of loyalty to a collective identity that is prioritized over individual human value.

Where Did Wokeness Come From?

Evaluating the theories

Wokeness, most observers would agree, can be defined as the progressive worldview that views all racial and sexual disparities as proof of discrimination, and rejects liberal procedural traditions in favor of a totalizing politics that seeks to dismantle those disparities and silence dissenters. But nobody seems to agree on where it came from. Is wokeness an intellectual, religious, psychological, economic, legal, or institutional phenomenon? Its emergence over the last decade or so has been attributed to everything from academic intellectual trends, declining religiosity, victimhood psychology, corporate self-interest, white-collar class interests, the civil rights laws of the 1960s, and the copycat tendencies of large organizations. These all seem to have some explanatory power, but none seems on its own to account for the phenomenon fully. Let’s consider each in turn.

Holy Bible and ‘Diary of Anne Frank’ too hot for school district

The Jerusalem Post explained the books are being removed as the latest “in a string of book removals being implemented at schools at the behest of conservative activist parents and school board members.”

It is the district in the Fort Worth area that ordered librarians to remove the Bible.

Diving Into a Pool of PC

A BBC documentary attributes Islamic and African prejudices to — what else? — the British Empire.

Some people are foolish enough to take their political cues from show-business celebrities like Bette Midler, Rob Reiner, and Cher. Not me. I listen to athletes. So when I heard that 28-year-old British diver Tom Daley had made a documentary about the current status of human rights in certain former British colonies, I sought it out at once.

‘Woke’ Military Policies to Blame for Recruitment Crisis, Servicemembers Say

When fighting the Germans was a drag

The U.S. Army is expected to fall nearly 40,000 troops short of its recruiting goals over the next two years. Fiscal year 2022 is expected to miss the mark by 10,000 troops, while the number in fiscal year 2023 could reach 28,000. These figures mean that this year is on track to be the Army’s worst recruiting year in almost 50 years.

The Army plans to circumvent the problem by offering $1 billion for its recruiting program and placing more emphasis on the use of its reserve units.

In basketcase Britain, thieves run riot while woke police forces do nothing

An 11-year old boy was recently called “shorty” by another boy on the street. As far as children’s taunting goes, this was fairly mild; further up the cruelty scale might merit some kind of disciplinary intervention from a parent, teacher or another allegedly responsible adult. What it almost certainly wouldn’t require is police action. Or at least it wouldn’t in the days before the world went mad.

Back in June, however, a Wiltshire police officer opened a “non-crime hate incident” file on the aggressor, also 11, for his jibe. Absurdly, the report could now appear in the kid’s criminal record checks for the next six years, hampering later employment opportunities and surely making him the sort with more, not less, time and inclination to bully others.
