Freedom of What? Michigan State Bans Trigger Language, Including the ‘A’ Word

Michigan State University (MSU) issued its latest style guide and Chairman Mao couldn’t be happier.

The style guide is updated yearly and appears easily translatable from its original Chinese (that’s a joke… I think… ). The new additions are sure to annoy you—and brainwash your kids—who are forced to toss the 1st Amendment into the trash lest they “offend” the school’s incoming milksops.

Wanted: new federal ethics commissioner. Salary: $110,000 less than the others were paid

OTTAWA — The next federal ethics watchdog will have to take a pay cut, as the governing Liberals have decided the next person to oversee their ethical issues should do so for $110,000 less annually than the predecessor.

On March 28, the federal government launched an “open, transparent and merit-based” selection process to find the next Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner, whose job is “promoting and safeguarding a critical part of the public sector’s core values and ethics.”

Twitter Will Never Stop Censoring Conservatives. It’s Broken Beyond Repair

A year ago, I was locked out of my Twitter account. On Friday morning, with no explanation, my account was unlocked. For a journalist, losing access to Twitter and to one’s followers is no small thing. I don’t have a huge following, but Twitter is an important platform in my industry, and losing my access to it limited my ability to do my job effectively.

I was locked out for saying that Rachel Levine, a high-ranking official in the Biden administration’s Department of Health and Human Services, is a man. Levine is “trans.” He identifies and dresses as a woman, but he is a man.

U.S. Should Set an Example to Combat Global Embezzlement

It remains unclear why Western governments are so reluctant to return ill-gotten funds to governments that badly need money for social and economic development.

Saudi Arabia and the Gulf monarchies exploring their geopolitical options with China has a dimension that the Washington debate has neglected: the kings, dictators, and their relatives across the world have accumulated hundreds of billions of dollars through the “privatization” of national budgets and/or what is known as “state capture,” where public service becomes the most profitable kind of business.

In the 1990s, authoritarian rulers like Presidents Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire or Suharto of Indonesia were accused of stealing not less than $5 billion and $20 billion respectively, sums that were never recovered. In the Mobutu case, Swiss authorities found only several million dollars in accounts that were returned to Mobutu’s family in 2009, while Suharto’s family was ordered to repay just $324 million more than fifteen years after he abdicated from the presidency.

Russia adopts new anti-West foreign policy strategy

President Vladimir Putin on Friday signed new guidelines aimed at curbing Western “dominance” and identifying China and India as key partners for the future.

The 42-page document, which was published on the Kremlin’s website, said that Russia would aim to “create the conditions for any state to reject neo-colonialist and hegemonic aims.”

Russia has become increasingly isolated on the world stage and has sought to boost political and economic ties with countries in Africa and Asia such as China and India that taken a more neutral stance towards its offensive in Ukraine

The fall of the Berlin Wall promised Europe a bright future – so what went wrong?

Timothy Garton Ash weighs the consequences of the push towards a single currency, the West’s dependence for energy on Russia, and Brexit, among much else

Homelands is Timothy Garton Ash’s first book since Free Speech, published in 2016, and is an account of Europe from the second world war to the current war in Ukraine, blending history, reportage and memoir.

Unsurprisingly, given how well-travelled the author is and how extensive his contacts are, among its great strengths are the personal encounters, experiences and anecdotes it relates. We learn, for example, of the Romanian pastor who, on hearing that Garton Ash is from Oxford, asks in all seriousness whether he has met John Henry Newman. A jailed Erich Honecker reaches into the pocket of his prison pyjamas to give Garton Ash a card ‘on which his secretary had typed a telephone number’. When he dials it, it goes straight through to the chancellor’s office.

The Phantom National Homelessness Crisis

Officials must recognize that behavioral issues are the primary cause of homelessness.

Politicians, government officials, and academic “experts” from coast to coast have been insisting for years that homelessness is a “national crisis,” as California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass both claim. That is a misdiagnosis, deflecting responsibility away from cities that should fix their own problems.

Every case of homelessness is tragic and complicated. According to new data, however, homelessness has reached crisis proportions only in a limited number of areas across the country, especially in California.

Cory Morgan: Report on NS Massacre Should Have Given Woke Politics a Miss and Stuck With the Facts

On April 18, 2020, Gabriel Wortman went on a violent 12-hour rampage leaving 22 people dead and three injured in Nova Scotia. The incident was marked with panic, miscommunication, and signs of outright incompetence from the RCMP as they tried to get the situation under control.

An inquiry into what happened was needed, and we got one.

Welcome to Britain’s Hungry Twenties

The young are suffering the most

Last spring, Elsie, a 77-year-old widow asked ITV’s Good Morning Britain to solicit any advice that Boris Johnson might have about coping with poverty. It was duly explained to the then-Prime Minister that Elsie only ate one meal a day and passed her hours going round and round on the local bus to avoid turning on the heating at home. Squirming, Johnson said that it was only thanks to his decisions that she enjoyed a freedom bus pass — and jaws dropped nationwide.

India sounds alarm over spate of Gandhi statue vandalism in Canada

A statue of Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi on the campus of Vancouver’s Simon Fraser University had its head removed on Monday night, the latest instance in an emerging Canadian trend of Gandhi statues being vandalized or defaced.

In a statement, Burnaby RCMP said that a “power tool” was likely used, and acknowledged “that Gandhi statues have been damaged in other areas of Canada in the past.”

Terry Glavin: Beijing apologists have conjured a racist bogeyman. It’s total nonsense

Among the various types of outlandish and sinister responses to the recent revelations about Beijing’s emissaries interfering in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections to the purpose of re-electing a Liberal government, the conjuring of bogeymen has been especially destructive to any clear public consensus about what’s at stake here, and what’s really going on.

‘Trans Day of Vengeance’ rally in DC canceled in wake of Nashville school shooting

The “Trans Day of Vengeance” protest set to take place in Washington, D.C., has been canceled in the aftermath of the Nashville school shooting.

Our Rights DC, the activist collective behind the event, announced Thursday that the April 1 protest would not be taking place due to safety concerns.

“This action will not be taking place Saturday due to a credible threat to life and safety,” the organization wrote on social media. “The safety of our trans community is first priority. This threat is the direct result of the flood of raw hatred directed toward the trans community after the Tennessee shooting.”

A Look at All of the Candidates in Toronto’s Crowded Mayoral Race

The race to replace Toronto’s mayor is getting more crowded as the June byelection nears.

John Tory, who was elected to his third term last fall, ran against 30 candidates. Tory resigned in February over revelations he had an affair with a former staffer.
So far, an even dozen have confirmed their candidacy to replace him and a couple more have said they are considering a run. The city will start officially accepting candidate nominations on April 3.
