Prayer in Public Schools Is Back…as Long as It’s Prayer to Allah

Parents Sue California Over Curriculum That Would Allegedly Teach Their Kids How To Pray To Aztec Gods

San Diego parents are suing the State of California for including Aztec prayers in state-approved curricula, the Californians for Equal Rights Foundation (CFER) said in a press release Friday.

The three parents are joined in their lawsuit by CFER. The lawsuit was filed against the state of California, the State Board of Education, the State Department of Education and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond in his official capacity, according to the press release. It contends that the proposed Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum (ESMC) violates the California Constitution’s free exercise of religion and no government aid clauses because it includes Aztec and Ashe affirmations in the curriculum.

This place inspires awe. If I close my eyes I can see silhouettes of Joshua trees against a desert sunrise; seals playing in La Jolla’s craggy coves of sun-spangled, emerald seawater; fog rolling over the rugged Sonoma County coast at sunset into primeval groves of redwoods that John Steinbeck called “ambassadors from another time.”
