Anti-woke University of Austin could reawaken true learning

The best news in academia in a long, long time came with this week’s announcement that distinguished scholars and thinkers are founding a new university “fully committed to freedom of inquiry, freedom of conscience, and civil discourse.”

Put another way, the new University of Austin will stand against “cancel culture,” speech codes, leftist indoctrination, “safe spaces” for students who can’t bear opinions different from their own, obsessions with race and sex to the exclusion of substance, racial preferences in admissions, and hugely expensive administrative staffs.

Interesting, given that Austin is the San Francisco of Texas.

North American beef prices are soaring as a labour crunch squeezes meatpackers and supply-chain snarls add to freight costs. In Canada, prices for a prime rib roast have risen 20 per cent in the past year and are the highest since at least 1995, Statistics Canada data show. But this time it’s done something rare by announcing one item on the agenda: an official resolution to revise China’s historical narrative under its reign, to reflect Xi’s take on the “correct” interpretation of party history — and by extension China’s.

What the party comes up with won’t just be an anodyne internal document only CCP nerds will obsess over. Xi’s historical revision will influence everything in China — from foreign policy, to what’s taught in schools or shown on TV and in films, to what constitutes the ultimate crime of disloyalty to the party — for an entire generation, if not longer.

Bill 2: Quebec to drop surgery requirement for people who want to change their sex on IDs

A Quebec bill that would have allowed only people who have undergone surgery to change their sex on identification documents will be changed.

The bill introduced Oct. 21 by Justice Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette was criticized by transgender-rights activists.

The law would have allowed people who identify as transgender to change their “gender” designation on official documents.
