All across the country, Canadians are returning to some semblance of normal. Adults are hanging out again and returning to the workplace; children’s activities have resumed and in several provinces COVID-19 restrictions and mask rules are gone.
Easier said than done, it remains to be seen if the fall brings a resurgence and our politicos decide to lock us down again. Let’s hope the vaccines work.

Kidnappers in Nigeria have seized a man who was sent to deliver a ransom payment to secure the release of dozens of abducted school children.
The elderly man was sent by the children’s parents after they managed to raise 30m naira ($73,000; £53,000) by selling land and other possessions.
But they have been left feeling hopeless following his kidnapping.
The north of the country is in the midst of a wave of school abductions carried out by criminals for profit.
Sunday July 11. Demonstrations erupt in the main cities of Cuba. Tens of thousands of people take to the streets. They know they risk being brutally arrested, sent to jail, possibly tortured and killed by the police. They reject the communist dictatorship that has oppressed them for 62 years. They shout “Libertad”: freedom. They hold up Cuban and American flags — once again, the symbol of people who yearn to breathe freely.
Those who dream of communism for the Western world first kept silent, then, while making a few criticisms of the dictatorship in Cuba, blamed it on an American embargo. They failed to point out that if the Cuban dictators cannot trade with the United States, they still can trade with the rest of the world; and also failed to point out that Cuba has nothing to sell: its leaders have destroyed the country’s economy.
Governments in Western Europe have made no comment to date; they seem to prefer avoiding the subject.

Since lockdown restrictions have been eased to a reasonable degree I have been able to make funeral arrangements.
Kathy will be laid to rest in early September, I will announce the time and place as the day draws near for those wishing to attend. Mom will be laid to rest in August.

Like all political parties, the Liberal Party is a coalition of ideologues and opportunists: those who enter politics to get something done, and those who are in it for something to do. It has ever been thus.

Covid: Delta variant spreads globally as cases soar
The Delta variant of Covid-19 has now been detected in 124 territories worldwide, the World Health Organization (WHO) says.
It is expected to become the dominant variant globally in the coming months, with the WHO predicting that there could be more than 200 million confirmed cases within a matter of weeks.
Infections are rising, particularly in Europe and the western Pacific region. Some Western countries have started to ease restrictions as death rates have dropped. But those without access to vaccines or with a slower vaccine rollout are facing a deadlier threat.

Mr. Trudeau was responding to a question from a Maclean’s magazine journalist regarding the murder of 13-year old Marissa Shen of Burnaby, British Columbia.
Just under four years have passed since this ghastly murder. Fascinating it is that no one knows whether or not consequences were applied to accused child-killer Ibrahim Ali.
